"Fake" as written by Robert James Smith, Simon Gallup, Roger O'donnell, Perry Bamonte and Jason Toop Cooper....
This place has begun to cover me
I recall the light, but the dark smothers me
I prefer the feelings I know right now
I don't worry about feeling very proud

You don't know how it feels
To be misunderstood
To reach for the sky
I thought you never would
You don't know how it feels
To be misunderstood
To reach for the sky
I thought you never would

But I'm bleeding, and my hands are bruised
From the grip that I once had on you
And I'm open for a new way
Because there's not much more that I can fake

It's almost seeing your soul for the first time
And watching the mirror show you life in rewind
Capture the ridicule of everyone
I'm tired of trying, and they wonder why I'm gone

You don't know how it feels
To be misunderstood
To reach for the sky
I thought you never would
You don't know how it feels
To be misunderstood
To reach for the sky
I thought you never would

But I'm bleeding, and my hands are bruised
From the grip that I once had on you
And I'm open for a new way
Because there's not much more that I can fake

I can't fake it

You don't know how it feels
To be misunderstood
To reach for the sky
I thought you never would
You don't know how it feels
To be misunderstood
To reach for the sky
I thought you never would

But I'm bleeding, and my hands are bruised
From the grip that I once had on you
And I'm open for a new way
Because there's not much more that I can fake
But I'm bleeding, and my hands are bruised
From the grip that I once had on you
And I'm open for a new way
Because there's not much more that I can fake

General CommentI wrote this analysis as a school project.

The song Fake by Shinedown is about someone who wants to be friends with someone else who doesn’t understand their situation. The first person is a big dreamer who thinks outside the box while the other is a popular pessimist who thinks dreaming is stupid, evidence of this can be seen in the line “You don’t know how it feels to be miss understood, To reach for the sky, I thought you never would”. This shows that the one character is reaching for the sky though no one understands him while the other won’t even try. There is also evidence that the dreamer is sick of waiting foe the pessimist to change, this can be seen in the line “But I’m bleeding and my hands are bruised from the grip that I once had on you and I’m open for a new way cause there’s not much that I can fake”. These line show that the dreamer is sick of being someone he’s not and feeling bad so he’s done with trying to make the other person happy. There is more evidence of the dreamer getting sick of the pessimist and telling him or herself to be honest. With himself in the lines “Its almost seeing your soul for the first time and watching the mirror show your life in rewind, capture the ridicule of everyone I’m tired of trying and they wonder why I’m gone” these lines show that the dreamer is telling the pessimist to be their self and don’t worry about what people think.
I like this song because I have been both the pessimist and the dreamer mentioned in the song. It is impossible for me to pick a favorite line from the song because I think it is a poetic masterpiece. Fake, like many of Shinedown’s songs is about being yourself and not letting the mean and fake people of the world bring you down.

General Commentits about someone who is ashamed of themselves and pretends to be someone else, but it is wearing on him. And he feels bad because he had such a tight grip on his girlfirend that she dumped him.
    He seems very suicidal

General CommentGreat song. My interpretation is a little different. It seems to me like he's with a girl who he thought would change or that he would be able to influence her to change, but she didn't; or she's given up on trying to change ("reach for the sky - I thought you never would"). And as a result he knows he's going to have to leave her, but he's afraid and is putting it off and just keeps "faking" those feelings that he still loves her or cares about her. He's pretending everything is fine, but he's waiting for the right time ("i'm open for a new way") to end it.

    Just my two cents.

    General CommentHere's my take:

A man is reaching for glory and "the sky". He has traded in his humanity for his chance at glory, and has adopted some very harsh ethics (or none at all). He remembers what it was like to be good and nice, and he's still hurt from the memories of that, but he is looking for a new way and is comfortable with how he is now, and he will not fake being like his old self. He also claims he is misunderstood.
