Just the other night
Body twisted in a pattern
You know they stare at the light
They are too dead but the body don't mind

Oh oh oh

You know a neutral sky
And nothing to do at night
Little highway lights
They shine

From the top of the mountain
To the rock and sand
Drive a dead farther west
Til they ran out of land
We walked five whole minutes
To the dark edge of town
Took a long look at nothing
And turned back around

Oh oh oh

You know the neutral sky
And nothing to do at night
Little highway lights
They shine

From the top of the mountain
To the rock and sand
Drive a dead farther west
Til they ran out of land
We walked five whole minutes
To the dark edge of town
Took a long look at nothing
And turned back around

i think this ones about human obstruction, how in living we (humans) must make room for ourselves to grow and expand as we do and with it weve taken away a night sky and replaced it with a thousand highway lights. As the earth had the sky, we have the highways... makes me cringe a bit too.

First let me say this is one of my all-time favorite songs, but you're reading waaay too much into the lyrics. Many of the Wolf Parade songs have deeper meanings and deal with ghosts and the dead and whatnot...but this is not one of them. Some of the "dead" lyrics imho are incorrect, as in "the EYES are dead, but the body don't mind".

"drive west until we ran out of land"

"We walked five whole minutes To the dark edge of town Took a long look at nothing And turned back around"

Now what activity can you do whilst both driving and walking to the dark edge of town? And why would you look at nothing and turn back around?

Exactly. So smoke 'em if you got 'em.

    My Interpretation

My mother used to stop her car every time she saw a dead animal in the road to move it to the side. She said she couldn't stand how people would rather just crush once living creatures into the pavement.

Whenever anyone asked how she'd like to be put to rest, she would shrug and say "I don't care. I'll be dead." She just hated how little respect people gave to life.

This song reminds me of that.

I miss her every day. She was too good for this world.

Wow, I can't believe nobody has commented on this song yet. I think it's great, probably one of my favorite Wolf Parade songs. It's just so damn catchy.

"Just the other night Body twisted in a pattern You know they stare at the light They are too dead but the body don't mind"

I think the "they are too dead" part is talking about people who are kind of mentally or spiritually drifting through life just going through the motions and never really being happy.

You know a neutral sky And nothing to do at night Little highway lights They shine

Then the neutral sky part is talking about life being neautral with nothing good ever happening and the highway lights I think, symbolize hope or something positive like that.

From the top of the mountain To the rock and sand Drive a dead farther west Til they ran out of land We walked five whole minutes To the dark edge of town Took a long look at nothing And turned back around

Then I think that part is about not being able to find happiness and just going back to having a mediocre boring life. It's kind of late so I hope that made some sense. :\

little highway lights reminds me of that one arcade fire song.... headlights look like diamonds. actually it reminds me of in the backseat to.....

while i completely agree with what positive tension is saying i find some irony that the sky is neutral and the highway lights shine. It's sort of like saying how we've taken the stars from the sky (by polluting the air) and though we've made our own new night lights it's really just the same as when the light came from stars. That was really badly explained, but I hope you have some idea of what i mean.

It's obviously about a zombie attack, you guys. I love this song, and it took me forever to find the accurate lyrics (these are missing some), but come on! It's obvious :) Though I'm sure there's something deeper, it just seems to fit soooo nicely.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
