"Forever Young" as written by and Frank Martens Marian Gold....
Let's dance in style, lets dance for a while
Heaven can wait we're only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?

Let us die young or let us live forever
We don't have the power but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music's for the sad men

Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders we're getting in tune
The music's played by the madmen

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever

Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don't they stay young

It's so hard to get old without a cause
I don't want to perish like a fading horse
Youth is like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever

So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever

General CommentOk first of all, I'd just like to say that this is songmeanings.net, where people post their views on what the song means, and not a discussion board about where they first heard the song and which tv show 'ruined' it.

    Ok, but about the song. This is my all time favourite song because it is absolutely beautiful and I love the lyrics. This is my intepretation of the song;

Let’s dance in style, lets dance for a while
Heaven can wait we’re only watching the skies -- talking about the beauties of youth, and that 'heaven can wait' while you're enjoying your youth, 'dance in style, let's dance for while.'

Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not? -- the original song was written about nuclear war and this is a reference to it

Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun -- talking about getting old and dying

Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don’t they stay young -- beautiful lyricism that indicates that one thing everyone has in common is that they have experience youth

So many adventures couldn’t happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true -- basically, youth is short and there's never enough time to experience it, but as you get older there are all these 'dreams swinging out of the blue.'

That's just part of my interpretation of the song. I think everyone should stop complaining about how The O.C has 'ruined' this song; just because the song is more popular, it is still just as emotive, insightful and beautiful as ever. This is amazing lyricism right here that never fails to take my breath away.

General CommentAAAAAAARGH quit the O.C - i knew this song would be ruined and now its claim is that it belongs to "ryan and marissa" - i want the music selecters of the O.C to keep their greasy paws off the bands with merit because your trashy show exposes them to trashy fans who destroy awesome music.... love youth group - shame such an awesome band from sydney are now part of the pretentious lives of californians.

General CommentHave you guys who stupidly believe that this beautiful song has been 'ruined' just because it was aired on the OC, have any idea the depth and importance the music is to the show?

"Passionate about good music and up-and-coming artists, Schwartz (the creator of the OC) has made the selection of music for "The O.C." one of his main areas of focus."

Have any of you 'haters' even looked at the back cover of an OC Mix Compilation? Because if you had, you defintely won't find people like Ashlee Simpson or Britney Spears or the Backstreet Boys on there. Do you think Josh Schwartz hops on google and types in, "songs not on the top 40" or "amazing bands and talents that I can ruin repuations of by airing on my show."

I think it's increbidly unfair to say a song has been 'ruined' just because it was screened on a television show of which the creator of the show, actually cares about the music he puts on it.

And it's so funny how that other person commented that its a shame Youth Group are now a part of pretentious Californian lives. I mean, the way he wants to keep "that sort of music" for "his sort of people" not the "trashy fans," it seems he thinks those "trashy fans" aren't good enough for music like Youth Group. Oh wait, hold on - who's the pretentious one again? He's a hyprocrite - his opinion is not worth anything because he's just as bad as those 'pretentious Californians' - whoever they are.

In the end, The OC, shouldn't be blamed for 'exposing these bands to 'trashy fans.' I doubt Schwartz put a gun to their heads so he could use their music. It's these precious bands that accepted so maybe you should blame them for wanting more people to hear their music. think they're great and appreciate their talents.

I think Youth Group are great; this is a truly beautiful song.

General CommentI'm glad this show was on The O.C. The O.C. may be an exaggerated version of real life, but it still reflects real feelings that people have, and this song fit in perfectly. And I don't think that this version of the song should be compared to the original. This one is from a completely different time. Also, a song doesn't have only one meaning. This one in particular can mean many things to many people, and no one should be told that "it means this" because it means a lot of things.

General Commentthis song to me seems to be about the difference between burning out and fading away and Youth Group seem to reaffirm that it is better to burn out than to fade away.

General Commentisn't this site supposed to be about what the song means? not whether you like it or not. if you don't like it, why the hell would you be commenting on it??

this song is about youth suicide; "let us die young or let us live forever"
generally your last memory of someone is how they were when they died, hence the person or people in the song want their youth to live on in everyone's memories forever. how do they ensure that this happens? they commit suicide while they are still young letting thier beauty live on forever, like glistening diamonds.

General Commentahh i love this song
when I heard it on the oc I was like wasn't that in napolen dnyamite ?

i think it was. But anyways I was looking for the lyrics of this song for a while and you just posted them so thats probally why they weren't here when I checked this site.

This song really suited ryan and marissa for 'their song" like how it says "Hoping for the best but expecting the worst"

like how so many bad things have happend to them in the oc

    yea its a great song
