"The Race Is On" as written by and Don Rollins....
I feel tears wellin' up cold deep inside
Like my heart's sprung a big break
And a stab of loneliness sharp and painful
That I may never shake

You might say that I was taking it hard
Since you wrote me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide in sorrow
When I may lay right down and bawl

Now the race is on
And here comes pride in the backstreatch
Heartaches goin' to the inside
My tears are holdin' back
They're tryin' not to fall
My hearts out of the runnin'
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
And the winner looses all

One day I ventured in love
Never once suspectin' what the final result would be
And how I lived in fear of waking up each morning
Finding that you're gone from me
There's ache and pain in my heart
For today was the one that I hated to face
Somebody new came up to win her
And I came out in second place

Now the race is on
And here comes pride in the back stretch
Heartaches goin' to the inside
My tears are holdin' back
They're tryin' not to fall
My hearts out of the runnin'
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
And the winner looses all

General Comment"And the winner loses all"

Thats the only bit I do not understand, unless it speaking of a race where the winner is the most heartbroken. I think the rest of the song is self-explanitory. His wife/girlfriend just brokeup with him OR he has asked out a girl and she has declined. I like the second one better personally, as I can relate to it more xD

General CommentI always thought that this song was refraining to being in love with someone, who breaks it off and gets married with someone else, leaving him bittersweet. He's feeling terrible about losing her, and yet the race is on for another to get her heart. However, "the winner loses all" would mean that the person who married her became miserable. His heart is no longer in the race, because she dumped him.

General Commentyep I think this song is about love. I think she left him cause he sings he came in second place and he is the winner that loses all. I think who she married made him miserable and that's why he is trying not to cry.
