If you think that a kiss is all in the lips
C'mon, you got it all wrong, man
And if you think that our dance was all in the hips
Oh well, then do the twist
If you think holding hands is all in the fingers
Grab hold of the soul where the memory lingers and
Make sure to never do it with a singer
Cause he'll tell everyone in the world

What he was thinking about the girl
Yeah, what he's thinking about the girl

A lot of people get confused and they bruise
Real easy when it comes to love
They start putting on their shoes and walking out
And singing "boy, I think I had enough"

Just because she makes you feel wrong
She don't mean to be mean or hurt you on purpose, boy
Take a tip and do yourself a little service
Take a mountain turn it into a mole

Just by playing a different role
Yeah, by playing a different role

The boat yeah you know she's rockin' it
And the truth well ya know there's no stoppin' it

So what, somebody left you in a rut
And wants to be the one who's in control
But the feeling that you're under can really make you wonder
How the hell she can be so cold

So now you're left, denying the truth
And it's hidden in the wisdom in the back of your tooth
Ya need to spit it out, in a telephone booth
While ya call everyone that you know, and ask 'em

Where do you think she goes
Oh yeah, where do ya suppose she goes

The truth well you know there's no stoppin' it
And the boat well ya know she's still rockin' it

You recognize the effect and the fact
That it's comin' when she rocks the boat.
But it's the cause hittin' on the cardinal laws
About the proper place to hang her coat.

So to you, the truth is still hidden
And the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten
But you should know that the doctors weren't kiddin'
She's been singing it all along

But you were hearin' a different song
Yeah you were hearin' a different song
But you were hearin' a different song

General CommentThe correct lyrics for the hard-to-understand verse are:
"You recognize the effect and the fact
that it's comin' when she rocks the boat.
But it's the cause hittin' on the cardinal laws
about the proper place to hang her coat.

So to you the truth is still hidden
and the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten
but you should know that the doctors weren't kiddin'
she's been singin' in all along."

I think it's insane that so many people seem to forget this song because I honestly believe it's one of the best songs in the White Stripes repertoire. The lyrics flow so unbelievably well--probably the most free-flowing song they have--and it's lyrics are so well-written and meaningful. Who can't relate to this song? Anyone who hasn't had any relationships, I guess.

General CommentVery clever lyrics. There are so many twists and turns and double entrendes, if you dont pay attention it will go right over your head..Sounds as if Jack is giving some advice to someone who's been dumped, and the dumper is clearly more evolved than the one who's been left.
It also seems as if the woman was rocking his world big time and he couldnt handle it. So he did the typical chickenshit move of "Oh boy I think Ive had enough" and pusher her away, trying to regain his contro. But it blew up in his face. Calling and getting advice from friends is the worst thing you can do. You have to go with your heart but it's too late. She's had enough, and he's left with his ego that got him nowhere. She sang her song of truth to him, but he could only hear his own version.
A most excellent example of cloaked lyrics.

General CommentThis is one of their best songs ever. My favourite line is "if you thinking holding hands is all in the fingers, grab hold of the soul where the memory lingers"
I don't think it's about a cheating girlfriend, I think it's more about the girl didn't really take the relationship as seriously as he did, but that she made that obvious from the start. He just didn't see it until it was too late and she told him straight that it wasn't a serious relationship, and he ended up getting hurt.
I think the singer telling everyone in the world is about the fact he can put it into a song and make her look really bad if he wants to, so don't expect it to just slide by, when he can show how serious he was about it even if she wasn't.

General CommentI can't believe this song doesn't have more comments. It's one of the best that the Stripes have ever done, and I defy anyone to listen to this and not have their toes tappin' by the end of it.

Besides... Conan O'Brien is in the video. That should be enough to make it uber-popular right there.

General Commentand i think a lot of the song is about being strong in a relationship. don't vicitimize yourself or be weak, cause you have just as much control as the other person does and if you exercise that control then it will minimize the problems the other person is causing in the relationship.

My Opinion>If you think that a kiss is all in the lips
    >C'mon, you got it all wrong, man
    >And if you think that our dance was all in the hips
    >Oh well, then do the twist
    >If you think holding hands is all in the fingers
    >Grab hold of the soul where the memory lingers and
    >Make sure to never do it with a singer
    >Cause he'll tell everyone in the world

    >What he was thinking about the girl
    >Yeah, what he's thinking about the girl

This part of the song basically says, "If you think the affair was meaningless and superficial, don't kid yourself and don't fuck around with a singer because he will put it all out there for everyone to hear exactly how he felt and what he thinks about you and the situation."

    >A lot of people get confused and they bruise
    >Real easy when it comes to love
    >They start putting on their shoes and walking out
    >And singing "boy, I think I had enough"

In this part of the song Jack is saying one option the scorned lover could take would be to give up on love. Lots of people do that when they get rejected.

    >Just because she makes you feel wrong
    >She don't mean to be mean or hurt you on purpose, boy
    >Take a tip and do yourself a little service
    >Take a mountain turn it into a mole

    >Just by playing a different role
    >Yeah, by playing a different role

But then Jack points out that just because you feel bad, it might have nothing to do with you personally. So do yourself a favor and don't make it a bigger deal than it needs to be. Reframe it by accepting that you weren't the one meant to be "the one" with her.

    >The boat yeah you know she's rockin' it
    >And the truth well ya know there's no stoppin' it

'Cause you are not over her yet. She is still in your system and you still don't have it under control - no matter how much you deny it.

    >So what, somebody left you in a rut
    >And wants to be the one who's in control
    >But the feeling that you're under can really make you wonder
    >How the hell she can be so cold

Someone rejected you because they wanted to protect themselves by ending the relationship. That's the banal truth of the matter. But, it's your feelings that are making you feel disbelief that she could treat you so coldly.

And so now you're in denial of the fact she didn't care about you. And the rotten truth is festering in your soul like a bad tooth. And it causes you to call your friends and you can't talk about anything except trying to make sense of why she left you and wonder what she's up to.

    >The truth well you know there's no stoppin' it
    >And the boat well ya know she's still rockin' it

All this desperate behavior on your part does nothing to change the fact you were just not that important to her. Meanwhile, the thought of her is still fucking with your emotions.

    >You recognize the effect and the fact
    >That it's comin' when she rocks the boat.
    >But it's the cause hittin' on the cardinal laws
    >About the proper place to hang her coat.

You understand all this intellectually, but the emotions are still there because you still made a final decision on thinking of this girl as "the one" vs. "just some dumb girl who wasn't that into you".

    >So to you, the truth is still hidden
    >And the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten
    >But you should know that the doctors weren't kiddin'
    >She's been singing it all along

And so you are the only one who can't see the truth and you're acting like you're a helpless victim when you should really just accept the advice everyone else was telling you when they said "Dude, this girl is not that serious. It's pretty obvious."

    >But you were hearin' a different song
    >Yeah you were hearin' a different song
    >But you were hearin' a different song

You misinterpreted who she was and what she was all about in this relationship. In other words, you were wrong about her. She was saying one thing and you were hearing something completely different.

General CommentMy favorite song by The Beatles is a song by Paul called 'For No One.' I always loved the feeling of the lyrics; three characters, the guy, the girl, and the third wheel, the one in the middle, the communication. I really love that finally someone else got this feeling, because well, we've all been in these situations. The desperate one that thinks it's not over, the one moving on but still being inconsiderate, and the one that has people crying on your shoulder.
