"Mary-Ann" as written by and Bruce/cooper....
Mary Ann
I'm really crazy about you
Do what I can
I just can't live without you
Mary Ann
Mary Ann

Mary Ann
My life was built around stars and sound
Your eyes were pools of laughter
Mary Ann
I thought you were my man

General CommentThe song originally had different lyrics. It was written as an anti-vietnam song, but there were allready a lot of anti-vietnam songs at the time, and they didn't want to make an obvious political statement. So they thought they'd do something else with the song, something more original, with more humor.

So they transformed it into this romantic love song, which turns out to be a travestite.

The contrast between this sweet love song and the dark "I love the dead" was meant as an extra humurous effect.

General CommentThis song is a very subtle, but hilarious, joke. Anyone hearing it for the first time will have a serious WTF moment :) And then they'll get slammed with I Love the Dead immediately following.

General CommentI remember when this song came out in 73. This song was the one that really pissed my parents off. They were cool with all the Alice stuff because they knew it was tongue in cheek but this one always had me asking my mom "how can he be singin about a girl who is a man?" My mom didn't want to have to explain to a 6 year old about being a transvestite. Hilarious. Good quirky song. I love it.

General CommentSeriously? I always thought she was his main man. "I thought you were my man" meant my best friend. But wow. Now I no longer like this song. :( I'm sad I looked up the meaning.
