The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I never meant the things I said
To make you cry
Can I say I'm sorry
It's hard to forget
And yes I regret
All these mistakes
I don't know why you're leaving Me
But I know you must have your reasons
There's tears in your eyes
I watch as you cry
But it's getting late
Was I invading in on your secrets
Was I too close for comfort
You're pushing me out
When I'm wanting in
What was I just about to discover
When I got too close for comfort
Driving you home
Guess I'll never know
Remember when we scratched our names into the sand
And told me you loved me
But now that I find
That you've changed your mind
I'm lost the words
And everything I feel for you
I wrote down on one piece of paper
The one in your hand
You won't understand
How much it hurts to let you go
Was I invading in on your secrets
Was I too close for comfort
You're pushing me out
When I'm wanting in
What was I just about to discover
I got too close for comfort
Driving you home
Guess I'll never know
All this time you've been telling me lies
Hidden in bags that are under your eyes
And when I asked you I knew I was right
But if you turn your back on me now
When I need you most
But you just let me down, down, down
Would you think about what you're about to do to me
And back down
Was I invading in on your secrets
Was I too close for comfort
You're pushing me out
When I'm wanting in
What was I just about to discover
I got too close for comfort
You're pushing me out
When I'm wanting in
(Yeah yeah yeah)
What was I just about to discover
When I got too close for comfort
Driving you home
I guess I'll never know
To make you cry
Can I say I'm sorry
It's hard to forget
And yes I regret

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
definately the best song on the album. I think it's pretty obvious what it means. When i heard this song it was a wake up call for me. I never realised i was like that until my friend was like "listen to that song and think about who YOU are"
it's basically two people that are together and one of them starts to want to know more about the other person but that person feels insecure about telling/talking about (personal) things and so they start to break away and push people out.
wow this song is amazing. tom & dannys voices are great. but it suprised me when i heard dougie sing. ive never heard him sing anything other than backup before truly incredible
Its awsome dudes n dudettes!!!!!!!!! Best song on the album!!!!!!!!! luv it!!!!!!!!!!!!
i agree with blink182fan92, it is probably 1 of the best songs on the album. agen its got loads of emotion n i luv the rhymin pattern of it. wish i cud write like that lol! woo gr8 song
the 2nd verse, where danny sings : 'And everything I feel for you I wrote down on one piece of paper The one in your hand You won't understand How much it hurts to let you go' makes me melt, he sounds so gorgeous, i think this song is fantastic, the lyrics will mean so much to so many people, because im sure everyone has felt like that at some point in there life
This is definately one of my favourites on the album - the accoustic they did was flawless of this.
The second verse: "Remember when we scratched our names into the sand And told me you loved me But now that I find That you've changed your mind I'm lost the words And everything I feel for you I wrote down on one piece of paper The one in your hand You won't understand How much it hurts to let you go"
I think it's saying that when you really love someone and they've changed their mind, then you reflect the memories and write it as it is. Amazing.
this song if fucking awesome. best song on the album without a doubt. i would explain what it is about but people have already done that so i will just praise the song... like the bit in the song where is sorta breaks down and tom, dougie n danny sing a bit each...it's so amazing! and oh my god! danny's voice is sooo beautiful and powerful! and dougie is just fucking gorgeous, but that is like besides the point... it's so easy to relate to...ahh i love it! :D cuz they sound angry and annoyed, but really they are just frustrated that they are losing the one they love. argh! i love it! soo much! it's fuckin amazin live! anyway! xx mcfly are amazing xx
aaaah i melt to this song, its really lyrically wicked. fletchers do it better. :)
