This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:

So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:

Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

He had dated and fell in love with a woman and for some reason broke up. They were living together, and she left and his life was a mess. For whatever reason she came back to live with him. But they were not a couple. Just fuck buddies, even though they both really loved each other deep down. The “Crimson door” is of course the inside of a woman. They both hide behind sex and love, even though a reunion could never truly transpire.
In the first verse. Flowers are either physical or representing gifts, given by the man to the woman. This guy really wants a second chance with this woman, but she will not grant him saying “I Love You” just sex.

Doing this, going out socially made them stronger. And I think the angels were drunk because no matter how much they tried they could not save this relationship. And love will be the death of him, because can’t go on for ever having sex with a woman that doesn’t truly love him. The girl, although she’s not admitting it, still loves him. But death is coming, just how long they will have to wait and see.
