If you just walked away
What could I really say?
Would it matter anyway?
Would it change how you feel?

I am the mess you chose
The closet you cannot close
The devil in you I suppose
Cause the wounds never heal

But everything changes
If I could
Turn back the years
If you could
Learn to forgive me
Then I could learn to feel

Sometimes the things I say
In moments of disarray
Succumbing to the games we play
To make sure that it's real

But everything changes
If I could
Turn back the years
If you could
Learn to forgive me
Then I could learn to feel

When it's just me and you
Who knows what we could do
If we can just make it through
The toughest part of the day

But everything changes
If I could
Turn back the years
If you could
Learn to forgive me
Then I could
Learn how to feel
Then we could
Stay here together
And we could
Conquer the world
If we could
Say that forever
Is more than just a word

If you just walked away
What could I really say?
And would it matter anyway?
It wouldn't change how you feel

My Interpretation:this song is a-mazing. i fell in love with it when i first heard it. i mostly agree with Flintstones. I think the guy has been hurt before so he is scared to open up to this new girl. so he puts his guards up. i have been in relationships when the guy had his guards up. it sucks. you are never exactly sure how they feel and sometimes they do stupid stuff and you dont understand it. so in this song i think he guy fell in love with this girl, but he gave her the wrong impression. so when she tries to leave him, he feels like an idiot. when he says "If you just walked away, What could I really say? Would it matter anyway? Would it change how you feel? I am the mess you chose, The closet you cannot close." that shows that he doesnt have a good enough reason to give this girl. he is obviously putting himself down by saying he is a mess and a closet you can't close. However, I am confused about the "devil in you i suppose cuz the wounds never heal". I don't get it. but my absolute favorite part of the song is "say that forever is more than just a word".its impossible to live forever, but love can last forever. Even when people die, memories of their love remain. Forever is more than just a word when you find the one person who you love so much, and the love between you can never die.

General Comment:the best song on the album by far, this song must be for his wife Vanessa for putting up with Aaron's problems.I know exactly how he feels i have been there and still my wounds won't heal.

General Comment:A very passive way of looking at his marriage. Saying she has the right to walk away from the "mess she chose". He also mentions that he will change, and everything could be better if she forgives him. I love the way the chorus strings together.

General Comment:I agree, this is one of their better songs as in a musical sense. What really got me was how he can turn feelings into lyrics in the purest form. Fortunately, I'm not in that situation, but I can relate to the struggle of baggage conflicting with current relationships. I need these songs to channel my emotions into just to get by. Thankyou Staind!

General Comment:I can't believe more people haven't commented on this song, it is by far the best one on the album, although, "take this" is a close second. I think everyone can relate to this song. Yes, it does seem to be about his marriage...but the lyrics are so heartful and meaningful...I loooove it. Definately a great song.

General Comment:once you've been married for a few years and broken your spouse's heart once or twice... then this song's true meaning will really jump out at you. I don't think you can appreciate this song fully unless you've been the one who has really hurt (or betrayed) someone you love.

General Comment:The first time I heard this song, it was live and damn did he sound good. You really felt his words in the heart. Everytime I hear it, I can just close my eyes and it will take me back to standing right in front of him listening to his awesome voice. Killer song, killer band..................

General Comment:dont really have a comment about the meaning of it, think people pretty much got it right.

but I saw this song live two nights ago, and I agree it's the best on the album. It brought tears to my eyes.
