"Medicine Hat" as written by and Jay Farrar....
There will be droughts and days inundated
Unveilings free from saturation
Departures raised with no masquerading.

There will be teachers that die by their own hand
Pundits that push headlong for atonement
Friends and followers devoted to living.

There will be watchers that plot from in confines
And those committed to society's circles
Unwary cogs with no cadence or virtue.

There will be right, there will be wrong.
Drop of the hat and it's already started
Just like that and the deed is done
What I'd give for the hat to be medicine
The time is now to be on the run.

My InterpretationIt's a song about the end of days. The lyrics describe, at least for me, just how bad this world will be before it gets any better. My father warned me about these things, but he died 15 years before this song was written, so for me, it reads like a prophecy. I think the song is brilliantly written, and I truly wish i'd been the songwriter. Jay Farrar is a lyrical genius. I looked up the term "medicine hat," and as it turns out, it's a place in northern canada. In the middle of God's nowhere, so when he says that he wishes that hat could be in medicine, I get it. Love this song. Favorite line is the song: "Unwary cogs with no cadence or virtue." I know people like this, they do damage without even realizing it. Whether it be from sheer stupidity, or just a lack of character, I've never found an answer.
