"i'm sorry" as written by Lacey Nicole Sturm, James Culpepper, Kirkpatrick Seals, Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya....
I'm sorry.
I don't mean to remember.
It's true that I dream less often.
I'm not ashamed of that long December

Your hand's coming down again.
I close my eyes and brace myself.
I only noticed your face.
No matter what you're gonna build my shell,
I'm falling.

I'm shedding my skin, but it's not time I'm told.
I am aware of what you mean and by then I'm only ten years old.
I close my eyes and brace myself.
I only noticed your face.

No matter what your gonna build my shell
My scars are yours today.
This story ends so good.

I love you and I understand that you stood where I stood.
I close my eyes and brace my self.
I only notice your face.

No matter what your gonna break my shell
I'm done healing.
I'm done healing.

General CommentGuys, it's freaking abuse. What she means by "I'm Sorry" is the fact that she upset the person that's abusing her, and here comes the abuse again. In the last verse, she's talking about how she understands what the abuser was going through and why they took it out on her and understands that it wasn't completely their fault.

When she says, "And its not time ((I always thought it was till) I'm told/I am aware of what you mean by then/ I'm only ten years old" She's meaning that she just plain knows what's going to happen, along with referring to the "long december" and stuff in the first verse.

I don't know why you guys are having trouble on dissecting this song... it's so straightforward.

General CommentWhere has anyone read that Lacey was raped? The only thing I've ever read was that she had some rough fights with her mother, and her mother probably hit her ("hand coming down again) as young as 10. This song to me is an apology to a family member (probably mother) that she's sorry that she remembers the ugliness back then. Because now that she's healed she can understand that her mother was hurting too. I mean think about if your kid is acting out, doing drugs and drinking alcohol, staying out late, ditching school, not following rules, talking back to you---and you are the only parent--I'm sure you'd be a little crazy. Not that it's right to hit your child, but now that Lacey is healed and can look back, she can see that her mother was depressed herself and desperately frightened of what her daughter was doing and didn't know how to handle it properly. I think I read there were a lot of other siblings and they were poor on top of it. So now she looks back and can understand it. When she says "You stood where I stood" I think perhaps that could refer to the mother was abused herself as a kid. Plus "this story ends so good" Because she is healed and she does love her mother still despite what happened. "No matter what you're gonna build my shell" Means just that she's gonna harden from being abused. Then I feel the last chorus is devoted to Jesus and so when it goes "I only notice your face" Now she's only thinking of Jesus when times are difficult and she has to brace herself---cuz then it says "No matter what you're gonna break my shell" Now her wall/shell that was built by her past abuse is now broken by Jesus. Jesus has broken her shell. Also, the "I'm shedding my skin" to me could mean she's tried to cut herself, and then she's "told it's not time yet cuz she's only 10" So it's not time to die.

General CommentThe lyrics to this song are actually:

    I'm sorry. I don't mean to remember.
It's true that I dream less often
I'm not ashamed of that long december.
    Your hand's coming down again.

I close my eyes and brace myself
    I only noticed your face
No matter what you're gonna build my shell
No matter what you're gonna build my shell.

I'm falling. I'm shedding my skin.
But it's not time I'm told.
I am aware of what you mean and by then,
    I'm only ten years old.

I close my eyes and brace myself
    I only noticed your face
No matter what you're gonna build my shell
No matter what you're gonna build my shell.

    My scars are yours today.
    This story ends so good.
I love you and I understand
that you stood where I stood.

I close my eyes and brace myself
    I only noticed your face
No matter what you're gonna break my shell
No matter what you're gonna break my shell.
    I’m done healing.

My Opinioni think the song is about her getting abused , and as the song goes on it shows that shes healing, at the end where it says "my scars are yours today" it shows that the people who hurt her have to deal with the guilt of what they did. and where it says "im done healing" it means that shes healed from the abuse.

General Commentwhen i first heard the song i too thought it was about Lacey being abused and hurt by her mother, then someone told me her cousin was beaten to death when he was ten and i listened to it again and was shocked by what it really means. i dont think its about her mother beating her becuase i've only seen lacey say he mom and her had fights, she has never said she was beaten.
Im sorry i dont need to remember. = thinking about her cousin. yor hands coming down again, i only noticed your face = she is seeing what her cousin saw that night as he was getting hurt. no matter what your gonna build my shell/break my shell= her cousins death is making her not talk and be alone and then her shell is broken and her strongness is only weakness. and leave that salty taste= i always thought that meant blood weant in her moulth afte being hurt but it really means she is crying for her cousin, tears are salty. im falling/ im shedding my skin but its not time im told= this is what made me get chills, she is saying her cousin is dying and his soul is leaving his body and shedding his skin even tough it is not his time, she thinks he died to soon. i am awae of what you mean and by then im only ten years old= her family is talking about it and being real sneaky so they dont scare her, but she knows what happened and iss reliving it over again. my scares are yours today, this story ends so good= she wont think about it anymore, when he died her scares(both out and inside) went with him, she excepts god and hs a happy ending. i love you and i understand that you stood where i stand= she says good bye to him and and understands he believed in god just like her. when she yells ''im done healing!!!'' she is saying what her cousin would have said, hes so happy he yells it. when she says it the 2nd time she is done healing and has god.
    Lacey saved me.

General Commenti'm not sure about the beginning..
but at the end, she is talking about how Jesus takes our scars and He can heal us from the things we went through and in the beginning they built the shell, but He breaks it.
lala.. i'm not good at explaining, lol.

General CommentI think that this song is probably about being abused by someone close to you, or someone you love. Maybe a family member?
    The line;
"I love you and I understand that you stood where I stood", Makes me think that maybe the abuser had also experienced the same things as a child. After all, we live what we learn.
Very good lyrics overall, I like them very much.
