"I'll See Your Heart & Raise You Mine" as written by and Paul Anthony Noonan Dominic Michael Phillips....
What's with the angel
and what's with the devil
They keep swapping shoulders
and I can't tell which from which
"Will you be my Kriskindle?
Will you be my better nature?"
says one to the other
But I think they're only showing off

I caught them play poker
and I think it was the devil who said
"I'll see your heart
and I'll raise you mine"

Yea, they keep swapping shoulders
I think there's something going on
"Will you be my sweet pea?
Will you be the card up my sleeve?"
says one to the other
and this time they hold their gaze
for too long

Now they're playing poker
and this time it's the angel who says
"I'll see your heart
and I'll raise you mine"

This is the story of the angel
who played poker with the devil
in the Garden of Eden
before it all went pear shaped

They said
"I'll see your heart
and I'll raise you mine"

General CommentI just think it's about human nature and the constant battle between good and evil that goes on between us, even back to the days of Eden. When he says "I'll see your heart and I'll raise you mine" I think he means each side is pushing to get their nature, their heart, higher than the other.

General Commenti'm probably wrong but my first impression is that it's about some girl he loves, the angel, and a friend of his, the devil. Before his eyes he can see them falling in love and he resents his friend for this but he's also a little hurt by her, hence "i can't tell which from which".

their second album lacks something but they're fantastic live. saw them during arts week in galway in july. brilliant!

General Commentthis song is simply paul playing around with a story of the euphamism of the angel and devil over someones shoulder (generally representing moral sonscience) playing poker and falling in love
