"Don't Leave the Light On Baby" as written by Sarah Martin, Stuart Murdoch, Richard Colburn, Michael Cooke, Stuart David, Christopher Geddes, Stephen Jackson and Isobel Campbell....
It's been a bloody stupid day
My baby called me up to say
Don't call me love, don't call me
It's not all she said

I truly love her but I know
I'm bad for her, I'm bad and so
At least she may forgive me for my honesty

My friend came back from being abroad
He was rich and I was overawed
His ship came in
I'm standing on the harbor wall

Another friend, the one I love
Turns to me 'Have you seen enough?'
'Let's hang about
There's nothing like a sunset'

It's been a bloody stupid day
Don't leave the light on baby
My baby called me up to say
Don't leave the light on baby
I'll see you sometime maybe
Don't leave the light on baby
It finally dawned on me tonight
Best to go down without a fight
I know you will forgive me for my honesty

General Commentthe organ MAKES this song. it's so jazzy and lovely. and it's such a picture of being rejected.

General Commenttwo years later, i read this song in a different light..

i'd say that maybe this is about someone who loves his girlfriend even though he knows he's such a mess and he's no good for her. probably not to his surprise, she breaks up with him.. and he just has to accept it, hoping that his honesty will eventually redeem him in her eyes...

General Commentits easy to hear this song and think its purely sweet and romantic. but now i also see it differently. its actually depressing now. dont leave the light on baby - ill see you sometime, maybe. this is one of their best.

General CommentI've always related to this song. I'm a messed up girl, so my boyfriends used to try to save me from myself. Eventually I broke up with them, but they remained my friends. The idea of letting someone go because you love them and you'll ruin them is so painful and beautiful... just like this song.

General CommentThis is one of my favourite B&S songs off what i reckon is their most underrated album. One of the things I love about Belle and Sebastian is their ability to make everyday events seem so beautiful and pogniant.

Another friend, the one I love
Turns to me, "Have you seen enough?"
    "Let's hang about
    There's nothing like a sunset"
It's been a bloody stupid day
Don't leave the light on baby

anyway, brilliant song from a brilliant band.
