Say your prayers
'Cause everyone will notice
And everyone will care
Fall asleep
'Cause sleeping was for angels
And angels never cared
Let freedom ring
Like the church bells and the choir
That never made a sound
No one can see
The lightning that's connecting
The storm clouds to the ground

You'll never make it alive

The sugar cane and the blood-red sun
Will not overcome what you have done
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
Burning in water, and drowning in flames
And all that you know
All that you see
All that you love is what's breaking me
And all that you know
All that you see
All that you love is what's breaking me down
It's breaking me

General Comment"Say your prayers 'Cause everyone will notice And everyone will care Fall asleep 'Cause sleeping was for angels And angels never cared"
He's calling her worthless, no one, because he says that everyone will care, but then contradicts that with sleeping was for angels and angels never cared. He's calling her an angel, meaning she never cared and can't be part of everyone, thus she's worthless. If that makes sense.

I'm thinking she cheated. She loved someone else as well, and in doing so she broke him down and destroyed him.

General CommentI think this is more describing having a secret exposed.

    "Say your prayers
    'Cause everyone will notice
    And everyone will care"
Meaning that everyone will take notice to this secret and they will all have something to say.

    "Fall asleep
    'Cause sleeping was for angels
    And angels never cared"
Meaning angels don't care about it and that it's not really a big deal.

    "Let freedom ring
Like the church bells and the choir
    That never made a sound"
Meaning basically do as you please. Freedom is freedom.

    I don't know really.

    Let freedom ring

He's telling his girlfriend (who apparently did something not-so-nice to him) to say her prayers to God so that He can help her deal with what's going to happen to her. Because everyone will notice and everyone will care. This means that the bad thing that she has done wil spread to where everyone will notice and care.
He's telling her to fall asleep because angels will be the only ones who are fair enough and nice enough to not care about the bad thing she has done to him. The angels see through her bad and to her good.

Remember: This is only my opinion. I also used this song as a project in my Theology class. The project was to take a song that barely anyone has heard of and has some spiritual reference and present it to the class. I got a 100.
And Meriwether is close to me, because I am from Louisiana and all.

General CommentI agree with Diana Louise COMPLETELY.

Let freedom ring probably means either she is free, or justice has been served. Like the churchbells and the choir that never made a sound may reference that it is to no effect, because you'll never make it alive.

Whatever it means, the jist of the song is exactly this "What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
Burning in water, and drowning in flames"

She did something wrong and must accept the consequences. There' no getting out of it (will not overcome=no one will forget), so just pray that you will make it through with dignity after the stones have been thrown.

General CommentMy history-nut of a friend has convinced me it's about the south back in the day, with slaves and all. XD I fully believe it's about a girl, though.
Of course, I have to defend my friend's point of view. XD Sooo.. "sugar-cane and the blood-red sun."
sugar cane was an important cash crop from the south. let freedom ring = freeing of slaves. blahblahblah.
But, yeah, I AM pretty sure it's about a girl. (:

General CommentRight around the time Meriwether were writing "Make Your Move", my fiance' passed away. At the time I was working with Steve (The guitarist) and he read my first blog on myspace which was about the passing of my fiance' and what I was going through. I gave the band free reign to draw artistic expression from it and he told me that a portion of their new album would deal with my loss. Annexation of Puerto Rico is specifically told from my standpoint, but after I read the lyrics to PAM, it goes pretty much directly to that first blog I posted. If I'm wrong, Drew can feel free to correct me.

    blog.myspace.com/…

Any doubters can look in my pics and see a pic of me singing Annexation with Meriwether at Clicks Billiards on the first anniversary of Caroline's death. Apologies to you poor bastards who had to hear me sing. lol

General CommentActually, on re-reading the lyrics...."What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
Burning in water, and drowning in flames" I realize now that Drew (I love that fucking kid) was telling me that what mattered was how well I dealt with it all. I'm still going dude. Getting married in Oct. :P Life goes on.....
