with an ivory pipe
and a cummerbund
in the dead of night on the Autobahn
with the long ago on the radio
and the dreaming moon...

we were young and in love
in a burning town
but the fire went out
I'm alone again now
and I finally know
how cool to be cold
with the dreaming moon...

I'll begin again
with another new name
and a whole new life
full of fortune and fame
but in the 100th year
I'll be right back here
with the dreaming moon...

General CommentThis is my favorite song of all time. I've never listened to a song more times in a row and never gotten the least bit sick of it. If it weren't so depressing, i'd dance with my bride to it for our first song at the reception. It's quintessential S.M., the most beautiful, heart-leaping music w/ melody, mixed with the most tear-envoking, depressing tale of woe this side of Poe. I'll always wish for that morbid-ass bride...

General CommentHaha, I came here intending to write exactly what 3RA1N1AC wrote-I have never been able to listen to a song so many times without it losing a molecule of its charm.

Everything comes together so perfectly. This is no song. It is a feeling, an experience.

My InterpretationIt seems like it's about letting go of a passionate romance thinking that you'll find something like it again anyway, and being comfortable with being alone for a time, but then realizing much, much later (perhaps when it's already too late) that even after finding everything you thought you wanted, what you really wanted was that one love you left behind because you didn't know any better at the time. Or maybe it's not even about coming back to longing for that young love, and it's just a cynical commentary that he'll "be right back here" to leave another lover behind again and again and the story/feelings will always be the same?
