In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I am as ugly as I seem
Worse than all your dreams
Could ever make me out to be
And it makes me want to scream
When it´s Halloween
And the kids are laughing
The rogue is a bank he´s never broke
But worth as much as a joke that no one is laughing at
Can you believe some things are not
Appealing and there´s a spot
On the ceiling of my childhood bedroom
And can these dreams you can´t imagine
Will never match the vision
That you had decided for me
You are to take away from me
Things that are mine and it´s not your right
Out that you´d wouldn't expect to find out
Can it be that I don´t want what you want?
And the only thing I could care for
Is a place in a home that is safe and warm
Safe and warm, safe and warm, safe and warm
Judge yourself if you feel the need
Just let me known to be
In search of the truth myself
There is a drop of blood on the ground
And it seems to me that it´s not my kind
And I can´t be sure if it´s yours or mine
I am as ugly as I seem
Worse than all your dreams
Could ever make me
Could ever make me
Could ever make me
Could ever make me
Worse than all your dreams
Could ever make me out to be
And it makes me want to scream
When it´s Halloween
And the kids are laughing
The rogue is a bank he´s never broke
But worth as much as a joke that no one is laughing at
Can you believe some things are not
Appealing and there´s a spot
On the ceiling of my childhood bedroom
And can these dreams you can´t imagine
Will never match the vision
That you had decided for me
You are to take away from me
Things that are mine and it´s not your right
Out that you´d wouldn't expect to find out
Can it be that I don´t want what you want?
And the only thing I could care for
Is a place in a home that is safe and warm
Safe and warm, safe and warm, safe and warm
Judge yourself if you feel the need
Just let me known to be
In search of the truth myself
There is a drop of blood on the ground
And it seems to me that it´s not my kind
And I can´t be sure if it´s yours or mine
I am as ugly as I seem
Worse than all your dreams
Could ever make me
Could ever make me
Could ever make me
Could ever make me

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
I read somewhere about this song's musical similarity to the Beatles' If I Needed Someone, and I do see the resemblance, esp. in the vocal melody.
