Hung up and bent on a stranger
Just trying to swing a full-time ride
I never knew the cold hand of danger
Til I met this one and took it inside

Now I can't get near it
Don't want to hear it
My cover's blown
I walked in the rain like a drone
All the way to Marquette

The infinite pet

I got something to tell you
Far outside the black and white
Aw I got something I want to tell you
But who will receive it tonight

When I got up I cut my neckrug off
Resigned my name to the ranks of the blamed and the scoffed
Cursing the day I met

The infinite pet
Comes when you pirouette

Hung up and bent on a stranger
Just trying to swing a full-time ride
I never knew the cold hand of danger
Til I met this one and took it inside

I sat back I put my neckshirt on
Resigned myself to the fate of the failed and the conned
Just like that day I met

The infinite pet
Cheaper than all your threats
Comes when you pirouette
The the the the infinite pet
The infinite

    My Interpretation

I think this is about a girlfriend who makes him feel way too comfortable, causing him to drop his guard too much and slip up. I also get the feeling that either the girl is fake in her complete acceptance of him (she might be trying to get something out of him--attention, money, etc) or he's just really paranoid that the situation is too good to be true. In coat-check, you give up what kept you warm outside, just as you let your guard down around people who love you. Neckrug: a rug is something people walk on, so I think that "cut my neckrug off" means "I covered up sensitive/emotional parts of me in the relationship," probably coming off as a jerk, which is why he would be blamed & scoffed at for being cold. Neckshirt: a shirt is something people use to convey a certain image of themselves, so "put my neckshirt on" could mean that he gives it all/tries to be the best & attractive to this girl, which could bring about feelings of being failed & conned because he still isn't sure she genuinely accepts & loves him.

He falls in love with a woman who seems to be some rich, easily controlled doll, and gets conned by her.

I think its "I never knew the cold-handed danger"

sounds like he had a major crush on an unattainable woman, and was shot down like the rest.

I think it might be referring to a drug addiction. But I know I'm wrong. Its just the vibe that I got.

I can see the drug-addiction interpretation sprinkled all over the lyrics, but I'm not sure if that's just me (and Tush). I'd be very curious as to what Spoon was thinking behind this one...

I had this idea of the Infinite Pet being like the dog that follows the kid home from school. The kid wants the dog to belong to him, but it doesn't, the dog goes where it gets the best meal. I'm not saying she's a bitch, but she seems to have loose ties to him and a few more boys whose homes she visits when she feels she can get what she wants out of them. The hair rug, coat check, and neck shirt confuse me, maybe it's a symbolic way of saying that he's cut ties with her or has taken up with her again. He knows that she's cheap and she only comes around when he "dances for her pleasure" so to speak, but he likes having her available and if he has to degrade himself to keep her around, that's just what has to be done.

neckrug, not hairrug. I get that the theme with that is the hair on the back of his neck, that patch that most men can't cut themselves and which he apparently wants to keep warm, but I don't fully understand all that.

When I got up I cut my neckrug off Resigned my name to the ranks of the blamed and the scoffed Cursing the day I met The infinite pet

I sat back I put my neckshirt on Resigned myself to the fate of the failed and the conned Just like the day I met The infinite pet

So I guess cutting the neckrug is shedding himself of her, making him the object of scorn and blame, most likely by her.

Then the dangerous coat check, he was out with this girl and at the coat check one of the other guys she sees showed up and blew her cover and that's what makes the coat check dangerous. The neckshirt might be a kind of false identity. He's not being completely natural from now on. He's on guard and he feels conned and like a failure because she was so slutty.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
