Trying hard to speak and
Fighting with my weak hand
Driven to distraction
Its all part of the plan
When something is broken
And you try to fix it
Trying to repair it
Anyway you can

I dive in at the deep end
You become my best friend
I want to love you but I don't know if I can
I know something is broken
And I'm trying to fix it
Trying to repair it
Anyway I can

Ooh...

You and me are floating on a tidal wave
Together
You and me are drifting into outer space
And singing
Ooh...

You and me are floating on a tidal wave
Together
You and me are drifting into outer space

You and me are floating on a tidal wave
Together
You and me are drifting into outer space
And singing
Ooh...

    My Interpretation

To me this song isn't about a relationship with others, its about the relationship with ones self. When i first heard it i was (and still am to an extent) severely depressed, and this song almost perfectly describes the inner turmoil of finding happiness and self worth... the lines that always gets me are:

"I dive in at the deep end You become my best friend I wanna love you but I dont know if I can I know something is broken and I'm trying to fix it Trying to repair it anyway I can"

its like trying to convince yourself that you're going to get better, or trying as hard as you can to have some respect for yourself, and all the while knowing that all you have is you, and that no-one else will be able to help you... ok so its a pretty schizophrenic interpretation but thats what this song means to me, and the belting "oooooooohhhh, oooooooohh"'s are killer too...

i think this song is about contrasting feelings. The first part of the song that talks about diving into the deep end is about doubting a relationship and doubting yourself. The next part about floating on a tidal wave is about having complete confidence. It's about opposite feelings. And seeing as x and y are kind of like opposites- one goes vertical one goes horizontal- it makes sense. this is a really good song, i love the strings at the end.

When asked about the song, bassist Berryman says"Our A & R man said it should be the first single. So we scrapped it." Frontman Chris Martin says "I was bathing my daughter and we were listening to I Am A Walrus, and I thought, Oh, you don't have to go, verse-chorus-verse-chorus, so I went in the next day and chopped out about three minutes. Then we added the strings, and this bit on the end. And then it was good."

This song can definitely be interpreted on a deep scale, but the subliminal message is the effect distance has on a person. Tidal waves are rough and unforetold as to where they may make their next current, just as the events in life are. When life gets you down, you're in an "X&Y", two different things trying to work for the best dispite the rough road between them.

Well there's a mistake in the given lyrics. Does anyone else hear him singing "SHE's become me best friend. I wanna love you but I don't know if I can"?

To me this song is more like talking about a man who finds himself fallen in love with another person (who he refers as "she" and his best friend) but doesn't want to be a bad guy and still tries to love his old lover (who he refers as "you"), trying to fix it anyway he can, not knowing if he can make it.

"I dive in at the deep end She's become my best friend I wanna love you but I don't know if I can I know something is broken And I'm trying to fix it Trying to repair it Anyway I can"

He wanted to tell her ("you") the truth, but was not able to. She felt it as well, because she's also trying to repair it anyway she can.

"Trying hard to speak and Fighting with my weak hand Driven to distraction It's all part of the plan When something is broken and you try to fix it Trying to repair it anyway you can"

One of the best songs on X&Y, in my opinion. It seems like it's about someone who's dealing with a situation where he's in love or infatuated with someone, but isn't sure if he can 'love her' because of certains things that stand in the way. It could be physical distance between the two of them, differences between them that make it impossible, or the fact that he might have done something to hurt her or cause her to lose trust in him, which he hopes to repair/fix.

Regardless, he's trying to make up for the situation in his head as he drifts away in thoughts of both of them 'floating on a tidal wave' and 'drifting into outer space', as if these limitations/restrictions could just disappear out of the picture.

This is the stand-out song of the new album methinks. Definitely has at least a hint of later-Beatles in it.

I think this is a reference to the band's constant efforts towards achieving perfection for the new album, and the strain it puts on family relationships. Would have made a far better opening single than Speed of Sound.

Beautiful. I love the deep presence of serenity in this song.

so, being a broke twenty one year old girl means that i'm listening to clips of the new cd on itunes. and the clip they have is.

I dive in at the deep end You become my best friend I wanna love you but I don’t know if I can I know something is broken and I’m trying to fix it Trying to repair it anyway I can

and it's terrible because this is the way a relationship i had that completely disintegreated with a (former?) best friend of mine. and man.

that song left my mouth dry.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
