"Monkey 23" as written by and Jamie/mosshart Hince....
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me talk like that
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me talk like that
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me talk like that
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me talk like that

There's a monkey on my back
Makes me act like that
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me act like that
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me talk like that
There's a monkey on my back
Makes me act like that

General CommentThe skip in the beginning is the only reason this is not one of the most perfect songs.

General CommentThe lyrics might be a reference to Turbonegro's 'Monkey on Your Back' from 1998. The monkey in the latter song also makes its carrier do things (like fall).

General CommentWTF, not a single explanation here?
Having a monkey on your back is a way of saying someone has an addiction. The 23 might be a personal touch.
'Gypsy death', the next song on the album, means having an overdose. And the rest of the album unravels along this line, Black rooster being the symbol for vice.
