My InterpretationWhen I first heard this when I was younger I thought it was about death... I don't know why I thought that.
Listening it to it again, I think its about someone trying to reach out to someone who's going through a tough time, like depression.. or even someone who might be contemplating ending their life?
But I think what most people said here is right, its about protecting someone you love... and wanting to take their pain away.
    Such a beautiful song.

Song MeaningIts a lullaby folks...its probably fairly obvious to anyone who has kids. Chris Cornell has two daughters.

Heaven's dead when you get sad... meaning I don't care about anything when you're in pain except fixing it.

..arrows and guns..hundreds more to save you from one. I would endure anything to protect you.

Out of time for the best time you had. Kids never want to go to bed because they live in the moment and they lack perspective...in that moment its the best time ever in history and they are devastated to have to go to bed.

General CommentPersonally I think this may one of the best songs ever created. It is truly a beautiful message presented with some of the best vocals and beat. The way Chris articulates the lyrics and changes his pitches through the song is amazing.

The song meaning is pretty clear to me. it is about someone who loves another so much that their whole world revolves around that person."Heavens dead when you get sad" meaning when this person gets sad his whole world is down. He would do anything in his power to save this person from harm, also wouldd do anything to make them happy. It could be about basically anyone that you love so much, but I think it must be about a mate because he says "I wont lose sight of where I belong and where you lie" meaning he lies where this other peron lies, as in lives. My favorite part is definitely th end when he states "I’ll take it all, arrows or guns
Hundreds or more to save you from one
    Save you from one"

Meaning he would fight an entire army by himself before letting harm reach this person.

General CommentProbably the best song on the album, along with Dandelion, I think that its about someone Chris loves and hes saying that when this person gets sad, Heavens dead, as in nothing else matters, because this persons sad, and so Chris is trying to cheer this person up, not YOU up, like Big-Mikey said.

General CommentI think the "heaven's dead when you get sad" part means that when you're sad, you feel like anything positive is a lie. The song is about recognizing a person's sadness and sympathizing with them.

General CommentAgreed Ed and Skylar, but I also think Chris isn't /actually/ talking about 'arrows and guns'. 'To save you from one' could mean one particular person, that he is prepared to sh*t from everyone to save someone he holds dear from one person. Maybe not the real meaning of the song, but it's an interpretation I like:)

General CommentThe whole part about arrows and guns is great. To take so many [bad things] just to protect the person you love from ever having to deal with it at all..
