"That Much Further West" as written by and Benjamin Nichols....
I tried, and I can't run no more
So tell Katie it's her that I adore
And as long as I love her best
I'm that much further west

And since, since she's been gone
I've done less right than I've done wrong
I ain't that much worse than the rest
Just that much further west

And the boys, they don't need my help
They can play these songs by themselves
Well I ain't that much worse than the rest
Just that much further west

Out west the only sky is blue
So tell Katie that I'll see her soon
Til then, the thoughts that I have left
Are that much further west

General CommentThis is the best song to open a Lucero show. It sets up both the show and the album. Love it.

General CommentI think this song is about hitting "rock-bottom," as a result of a failed relationship with "Katie". Going west is a metaphor for digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole, which is something he's been doing for a long time - getting further and further "west" until he can't run any more.

Lots of people stuck in addiction convince themselves that things aren't so bad by comparing themselves to others who are worse off, and that final rock-bottom moment is different for every person. He "ain't that much worse than the rest" (of the people he's compared himself to), but he's "that much further west" indicating that, for him, it's time to STOP.

He knows, too, that it's going to take time before he's well again. And for that, I think, "west" starts to take on a double meaning; it's far from his old life, it's a place where only the skies are blue and he can focus just on himself for a while.

General Commentthis song's great. it's funny though, when you listen to it, you don't really realize what he's saying, and then when you look at the lyrics, you can see the whole picture.

They're all that I have left (not quite, I can't get this ink off my shoes [I don't want to try])

General CommentI think this song is about coming to terms with, and moving on after, Katie's death. I think "further west" is a metaphor for moving on in a more spiritual sense or leaving your old self behind. Really a deep and beautiful song with many layers of meaning.
