Speak
Speaking for myself
Pretend I'm someone else
I never felt the same
Well this time
Breathe
I'm breathing up the air
It's burning up my lungs
It's burning through my hair
I never felt

Hey kids
What are you rocking for?
Hey kids
What are you rocking for?

Stick
A finger through the sky
I'm blowing up the sun
The earth is going to die
I might die too
And all the things I love
And all the things I need
I never quite receive
And it's still

Hey kids
What are you rocking for?
Hey kids
What are you rocking for?

And I
Am standing in the rain
I'm laughing at myself
Today, today, today
And I
Am breaking from the strain
I'm laughing at myself
Today, today, today
And I
Never needed more
Than all of your bodies
Don't you know
I never needed more
Than all of your love

It's only been a game
Palpitation of the heart
I never wanted more
So maybe we could play
It's only been a game
The bleeding of the heart
You let your missiles fire
And we all start to run

Hey kids
What are you rocking for?
Feel it for the first time
Hey kids
What are you rocking for?
Feel it for the first time

Hey kids
What are you rocking for?
Feel it for the first time
Hey kids
What are you rocking for?
Feel it for the first time

What are you rocking for?

It's so oddly "bright" compared to most of his other songs, it's so cartoony, almost. Especially the today, today, today, with the little voice behind him. It's almost silly, makes me grin. No clue, maybe it's a tongue in cheek cmmet on how adults act childish. no clue, none at all.

I slept on it. he's making a mock-kiddie sing along, almost, and he's speaking to the next generation. "Don't you know I never needed more Than all of your love" it sounds almost like a robbing the cradle kind of thing. No. Maybe not. Maybe he wants the kids to appreciate his music. heheh. Well, he's saying something. Maybe it's don't make the same mistakes i've done, be good, go to school, do things right.

isn't that Tegan Quin singing in the background? Sounds so much like here...but yeah I agree that I feel this is a mock-kiddie song. I think its also poking fun at blind optimism.

personally, i think the song is just poking fun at the way modern rock music is always so gloomy and depressing... or at least a lot of genres, like grunge, and emo.

Even look at all the really lame Avril Lavigne pop shit you see these days. They are always whining about something pointless!

It's almost like we just want to be pissed off about ANYTHING sometimes... that we forget to just take it easy, laugh at ourselves every now and again!... You know, HAVE FUN!

So, "hey kids, what are YOU rocking for!!?????"

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
