"This Is How A Heart Breaks" as written by Robert Kelly Thomas, Pontus Winnberg, Christian Karlsson and Henrik Jonback....
Don't you want to go for a ride
Just keep your hands inside
And make the most out of life
Now don't you take it for granted
Life is like a mean machine
It made a mess out of me
And let me come between
Like an anchor dream, I was stranded
I was stranded, yeah yeah yeah

And I'm steady though I'm starting to shake
And I don't know how much more I can take

Well this is it now
Everybody get down
This is all I can take
This is how a heart breaks
You take a hit now
You feel it break down
Make you stay while I wait
This is how a heart breaks

Don't you want to go for a ride
Now to the other side
Feels so good you could cry
Now won't you do what I told you
I remember when you used to be shy
Once we were so fine, you and I
And why you gotta make it so hard on me
Yeah it's hard on me

And I'm sorry but it's not a mistake
And I'm running but you're getting away

Well this is it now
Everybody get down
This is all I can take
This is how a heart breaks
You take a hit now
You feel it break down
Make you stay while I wait
This is how a heart breaks

This is how a heart breaks

You're not the best thing that I knew
Never was, never cared too much for all this hanging around
It's just the same thing all the time
Never get what I want, never get too close to the end of the line
You're just the same thing that I knew
Right before the time when I was running from you

Well this is it now
Everybody get down
This is all I can take
This is how a heart breaks
You take a hit now
You feel it break down
Make you stay while I wait
This is how a heart breaks

Well this is it now
Everybody get down
This is all I can take
This is how a heart breaks
You take a hit now
You feel it break down
Make you stay while I wait
This is how a heart breaks

Oh yeah
This is how a heart breaks
Oh-oh-oh
This is how a heart breaks
I can't take it
How a heart breaks
Oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah
This is how a heart breaks
This is how a heart breaks
Oh-oh

This is how a heart breaks
This is how a heart breaks

General CommentI love this song so much, love Rob Thomas anyway, but this is especially good! Reminds me of a couple of MB20 songs. Rob Thomas' voice is just so sexy!

General CommentI've heard Rob talking about it, and he said the song was about the process of falling in love: at first we think it's the best we could ever dream of, it captures us and trick us somehow but we end up realising it was not like that at all, it was just the same thing that we knew...we end up dissapointed and tired of it.
I still think it's probably the song in the album that resembles the most of Matchbox Twenty songs, but I agree that it's more hopeful and upbeated...it is just not that bitter, I guess. Rob is quite a happy guy now! :) lol

General CommentI don't think this song is about a break-up at all. I think Rob "disguised" it as such, but really it's an internal dialog between two halves of a self-destructive person (potentially drugs "take a hit now", but not necessarily). It came together after seeing the video for the first time recently, in which Rob is running away from someone the entire song, only to have that person catch him...and it's Rob himself. Then I paid attention to the lyrics, and it makes sense.

First verses that begin "Don't you wanna go for a ride" are the destructive side of him trying to tempt him to do something he knows is wrong..."make the most out of life; don't take it for granted".

The rest of the song is him convincing himself not to give in to the temptation. Particularly the bridge of the song, talking to the "other" half of himself he doesn't want to need any more:
"You're not the best thing that I knew
Never was never cared too much
    For all this hanging around
It's just the same thing all the time
    Never get what I want
Never get too close to the end of the line
You're just the same thing that I knew back before the time When I was only for you"
All the reasons why he shouldn't indulge.

Then the chorus, of course, he breaks his own heart by giving in to temptation: "This is it now...Take a Hit Now, feel it break down...."

Like many of Rob's songs, the meanings are bewteen the lines, but the songs, particularly this one, are great on whatever level you enjoy it at. But once I interpreted it as such, this song got way cooler for me. Not just a typical "heartbreak" song indeed.

General CommentIsn't this the theme song for this year's NBA Finals?

I'm heartbroken because this year's Finals SUCKS.

General Commenti love the part where he says "everybody get down". sometimes when your heart is broken you feel like you could do just about everything, but then again some other times you feel like you can't do anything at all

General CommentI like this one, is a very strong opener to his cd, like it used to happen with MB20. It's very powerful, and his voice sound as strong as they always did. Some lyrics stand out as well, like "You're not the best thing that I knew, never was never cared too much for all this hanging around..." it brings back a grasp of MB20's anguish, that we do miss so much.

General CommentThis is absolutely the best way to kick off the solo stint, with the most upbeat, rocking song of the CD. I loved this song since I first heard it. I had a clip recorded off a radio station prior to the CD's release, and I listened to it repeatidly. I finally bought the CD, and the "Repeat" button was killed. Awesome song.

General CommentI agree this is an awesome song to kick off Rob's solo effort. It has the upbeat tempo and feelgood, singalong factor to it but the lyrics are still honest. It's got the trademark heartbreak in it but it's much more hopeful and upbeat than a lot of Matchbox 20 songs. I think it's just about how you feel the world crashing in around you when someone hurts you ('everybody get down'), but in the end, you move on ('you're not the best thing that I knew')

General CommentThis is good stuff. I've no input on its meaning, but the song is immediately in-your-face and doesn't let up.
