"Best Of You" as written by David Eric Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Christopher A. Shiflett and Nate Mendel....
I've got another confession to make
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn't have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can't choose
I swear I'll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh

Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

I've got another confession my friend
I'm no fool
I'm getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I'll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh

General CommentThe song doesn't have to be confined to cliched songs about love and relationships, it's about "breaking free from things that confine you", as said by Dave Grohl. At the risk of sounding sentimental, it could be breaking free from the things in you that were holding you down, all the regrets, all the pain, that you may have felt, everything that which is holding down your full potential.

General CommentTo me this song juxtaposes the dichotomy of the human spirit. Getting the best of someone of course can mean two entirely different things. This song describes a relationship where a person feels emotionally, mentally and sometimes even physically spent; on someone who's essentially robbed everything from them. (Especially their dignity). These types of relationships are stepping stones and prepare you for someone else who will truly get the best/best of you. We've all been there and only after do we realize these people never deserved any of you, let alone the best.

General CommentHave you ever given something (or someone if you like being so cliche) everything you have, and been hurt by it? Like you were conned out of an experience, or something? You feel like you wish you hadn't begun whatever it is that put you where you are now. Some of us are "door mats." We do this too often. We enter things with good intentions, expecting equal return, nothing less, but more importantly, nothing more. When this happens so often, and you get beaten down, there comes a point where you just want to stop being you, and stop careing, but you can't.

    Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
    The life, the love
    You die to heal
    The hope that starts
    The broken hearts

I think this part of the song is just saying that you're not imagining things, that pain, those let downs, those situations where you've felt used and taken advantage of, where you put in more than you were supposed to get back, they're real, and the narrorator of the song recognizes that you would die to heal those wounds, and be done with those pains.

I think this song is consoling that breaking point, where you feel like you're going insane trying not to be hurt by things anymore.

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I'll never give in
    I refuse

This part of the song is like that rebelious point. "Were you born to resist, or be abused?" is rhetorical. You have a choice, to give in to being let down, it's that "are you a man or a mouse" kind of thing. You can man up, or lay down, and one is easier than the other, but only one of them is an acceptable choice to make if you want anything good to happen. I think it's saying instead of letting it hurt you, see it through. If it is going to get the best of you, then you should fight to get the best of it, too.

I was too weak to give in
    Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
    But I break loose

These lines mirror the previous section about making the choice to stand up and move forward, not give up, to be strong and not give in. Don't accept anything less than you deserve.

Instead of giving up, realize that, after all you've been through, after everything you've done, you've proven that you're too strong to give up hope that things can't be great, that you won't always be that door mat, so when things get bad, just remember that you know you're strong enough to get back up and move forward. If you've found something worth giving your best to, and it refuses, takes what you have, and kicks you to the curb, don't give up, get up and fight for what you deserve, because it's worth it.

General CommentI listen to this song when people have broken me - or I've let them break me. It's like Foos have given me a needle and thread and said 'stitch up those wounds and get on with life'.

My InterpretationI believe this song is about someone who keeps getting taken advantage of.
There hurting because of it, and they feel used with no love.

General CommentLike someone above said, even if you haven't been taken advantage of in one way or another, this song makes you feel like you have been. Every now and then a song comes along that makes me think about stuff I'd rather not think about. This song is one that makes me think the hardest. An acoustic version might be nice, but I think the harder version gives it, for lack of a better word, oompf. If a song ever "spoke" to me, this one is it.
