"If New Orleans Is Beat" as written by Robert Baker, Gordon Downie, Johnny Fay, Joseph Paul Langlois and Robert Gordon Sinclair....
Your smile is fading a bit, so I ration it
Don't think about it
Here where the Mississippi quits
Where it's still got a bit of Minnesota in it

No one will give you a thing these days
They'd rather kill it or throw it away
Don't 'do' dark American streets so

If New Orleans is beat, if New Orleans is beat
If New Orleans is beat, if New Orleans is beat
If New Orleans is beat, where does that leave you and me?

The river takes, takes, takes and takes
It doesn't change and only changes
See it there in a picture with me
There's a caption beneath, 'New Orleans is beat'

And if New Orleans is beat, if New Orleans is beat
If New Orleans is beat, if New Orleans is beat
Where does that leave you and me?
Where does that leave you and me?
Where does that leave you and me?

Your smile is fading a bit so I ration it
Don't think about it

General CommentMan, I submitted this song like a year ago and it never got posted...they probably thought it was the same as 'New Orleans is Sinking'. WHatever, this song rocks - not sure what it means, but I'm fine with that!

General CommentI see this song as kind of a symbol of the downfall of society. I think "the world's changin' for the worse" is a recurring theme in the hip's lyrics. The Mississippi river is a great symbol of the power of nature. In the midwest (Minnesota) it is just gorgeous. Down near New Orleans I picture it as being significantly less natural and more polluted. So it's still got a piece of that natural beauty, but it's slowly dying, and so is nature; so where's that leave our future? Is it inevitable or can something still be done? I don't know, that's just what I get out of it.

General CommentI get a bit of that downfall of society/nature vibe too, it's all over this album. I just think that this song, as with new orleans is sinking is very eerie to listen to after katrina, I wonder if they'll write a post-katrina new orleans song.
