I'm not your star
I'm not that beam of light
here to save your life
to make your wallet fat
while mine is on a diet
it's not my greatest care
but simple needs are scarce
it's never ending

it really seems unfair
but lately I don't care
I don't care about much
I've given up trying

so sing about love
and sing about lust
so they will care
they are the same difference

well that's what happens
when you play catch without arms

it's what sets us apart
well that's what happens
when you compromise your art (heart)

it's what sets us apart

we have got this far
I don't know if you care
but I think that you should swear
or something of the sort
show me you are trying

so sing about love
and sing about lust
so they will care
they are the same difference

set the bait
so they will bite it
if there is a hook
they can't deny it
sing about lust
so they can feel it
sing about love
so they will sing it
sing it

I'm not your star
I'm not that beam of light
here to save your life
oh no

General CommentI'm guessing this song is about the music industry. "El Cielo" didn't sell many copies, so naturally, their label wanted Dredg to soften their sound/be radio friendly/whatever. I guess this song is their resistance of that.

"Not ... to make your wallet fat" - Dredg isn't here to sell millions of copies.

"So sing about love, sing about lust, so they will care" - The radio is full of shallow songs and to get on you have to conform so people will listen.

"That's what happens when you compromise your art, that's what sets us apart" - They don't want to sacrifice the focus of their art for a spot on the radio.

"We've got this far, I don't know if you care" - After ten years of playing and getting no recogintion

"But I think that you should swear, or something of the sort, show me you're trying" - If you take the literal term of "swear" as in "profanity", tons of bands spew needless f-words just to look "cool" or whatever

"Sing about lust/love so they can feel it" - Make your songs easy to understand, shallow, predictable, and the radio audience will like you

    What do you all think?

General CommentWho's to say if anyone deserves anything in this world to begin with? I'm sure we're smart enough to realize classifying people based on whether they like a band or not is rather stupid.

Yes.. great title track to a great Dredg album.

General CommentGeez, this band must have some of the biggest douchebags I've ever seen for fans. Its music, beautiful music at that. Art is ment to be shown to the world, not some 16yr old crammed into a basement who feels that only a select few should hear it. The best thing you can do is show it to anyone you can and maybe they'll like it in their own ways, maybe not.

General Commentfirst comment nailed it, there's no real need to analyze any further. I do find it funny that though it is the 100% beautiful dredg that we expect, it's written to be catchy, but while talking shit to those that want it radio friendly..

And I take "catch without arms" could be taken as this.. you can't be part of the game without certain important features.. like talent. By game I do NOT mean popular music, just quality music as a whole. People come in and get their music written for them, someone else play the songs, and have yet another person edit and completely change their voice (ashlee simpson, anyone?) and they STILL make it big. That's playing catch without arms. Just my .02.

General CommentDude you totally got it. Thats exactly what I got from the song, Its funny how amazing of a band Dredg is, yet they still get no recognition at all, just shows you most people dont know incredible musicians and incredible music when they hear it, oh well i guess they're content with their crap rock, its for the better they dont deserve to have Dredgs' music hit their wieny ears. there im done, is anyone else going to the show at the henry fonda theater???

General CommentHey Futlie5, it's great that you enjoy Dredg because, yes, they are a talented band. But you're "elitism" towards music and peoples tastes makes you a douche bag. People aren't worthy to hear and like this band? What makes you so much better than them? Is it because you have a different taste? Shut the hell up and enjoy the music.
