Where is the moment when we needed the most?
You kick up the leaves, and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue sky's faded to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carrying on

Stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carrying on

'Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile, and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down, and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carrying on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile, and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

Sometimes the system goes on the blink, and the whole thing it turns out
Wrong
You might not make it back and you know that you could be well, oh, that
Strong
And I'm not wrong

So where is the passion when you need it the most?
Oh, you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

'Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You see what you like
And how does it feel one more time?
You had a bad day
You had a bad day (had a bad day, had a bad day, had a bad day)

General Comment:Just a great song. I agree with the previous explaination. See the video. Its just great. Even if things are so shitty and there is no-one who can hold you, Its only a day ! It'll come around...When you least expect it and in the strangest way someone will pick you up and love you.....

Id like to dedicate this song to Katrina who is the greatest person on the planet. Babe, its terrible we cant be together.. I had a bad day...But we'll be okay......

General Comment:I personally envision a completely different meaning to this song (having not seen the video, and been having some unpleasant experiences as of late).
I see it as "I" (i.e. Powter) trying to convince someone ("you" in the song) who's having a rough time, and is basically depressed, to snap out of it - the "bad day" is symbolic of the whole period of depression. Trouble is, the one he's singing about isn't making it easy for him. She's in a vicious cycle of depression and refuses to even try and get out:
"You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee you go
You tell me your life's been way off line"

And the guy's starting to get weary from it:
    "You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on "

'cause however much he tries to convince her of her worth, she denies it and remains firmly depressed:
    "You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie "

But he keeps trying because he knows that one day he'll break through to her:
"You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well all that strong
    And I'm not wrong"

Okay, so not all the lyrics fit, but on the most part this is how I see things. Like I said, I've been through this experience later and this song's been quite comforting...

    Song Meaning:Bad Day

Daniel Powter has written a song that’s called Bad day. It’s a song that uses anaphors almost in every stanza, the word you is repeated throughout the whole chorus and the word they is repeated twice in the beginning.

I think that the song could be about two things, either someone having a bad day or someone who has a drug addiction. There is a key phrase if you want to find out to what you belive the song is about. That is the phrase “you’re faking a smile with the coffee to go”

If you view it as he just has a bad day, you think that well the coffee is just a metaphor for a day when you are tired and don’t have the will to do anything.

However if you think that the song is about a drug addiction you think that he means that the character fakes a smile and continues with coffee as a motor, so he becomes an addict to coffee and if he doesn’t have it he will become angry and his body will start to protest.
You could even substitute the word coffee with a drug of your taste and the song takes an interesting twist.

You can also look at other phrases to strengthen the theory, for example:
“well you need a blue sky holiday” could mean that he means that the character needs a completely drug-free holiday. Or just that he needs a holiday where the sky is blue.

I feel like the song is told from a friend’s perspective, because he talks directly to the person and the nearly whole chorus is just anaphors that start with the word you.

I think that the narrator is someone who had been close to the character “you”, because he says “they tell me your blue skies fade to gray” and “and I don’t need no carrying on”.

With those two phrases he explains that he did know the character when he was more happy and that he doesn’t want to continue to be with the person now that he is more sad. The setting of the song is kind of dark and the accords are played in a pretty melancholic way, except in the bridge were the accords are more bright and the drums are turned up a little bit.

The title is quite obvious and sums up pretty much the whole song in it. There is a little bit of metaphors when he sings “your life’s been way off line” “you’re falling to pieces every time” the character isn’t really falling to pieces or his life isn’t literally off line but the singer is describing how the character is feeling.

Powter works with rhymes throughout the whole song and uses them to make the listener feel the rhythm of the song that is a mixture of 6,7 and 8 beats.

I think that he is trying to describe a bad day and that everyone has one sometime. Before i started this analyzation I hadn’t really thought about the lyrics, but now I can see that the song is quite a depressing one. It doesn’t have any positive phrase and after you have listened to it you become quite aware of how sad the life of this person is, and that many people live their life all sad and passionless. It makes you think about that you need to appreciate your life because like internet memes throughout the year has taught us you only life once.

General Comment:i think this song is about liking someone who doesn't know that you exist or never thinks of you in the relationship sort of way..and the song is about realizing that you prolly have as much in common with that person as they do with you..and that in the end, the two of you are prolly perfect for each other..the video to this song at launch.com is actually just perfect in figuring out what the song means

General Comment:I love the picture they draw in the vid too, and I love this song. I agree mostly with Nashopian. Sometimes things suck, and sometimes they stink one day after another. But eventually things will work out, we'll work through it, and there will be things in life that will make us happy because there will be people there to help us through. ...I think people will probably be able to take a lot away from the video that I don't really get from the lyrics, but I like the video

General Comment:This song is cool. It seems it's about two people who have never met before yet they are communicating through art. it reminds me alot of my first relationship when i was eleven. We never actually spoke it was us talking through signs or it seemed that way anyway.
