Wake the dead
Serial sleepers slay with words instead
Sleep with the light on
Keep the lonliness away
I feel the darkness anyway
And I reach for the doorknob

Wake the dead
Serial sleepers slay with words instead
Oooh
Rise up oh sons of God
And sing the song that hides behind your Teeth
These ears have longed to hear
All night long waiting for

Save our souls before all our dreams come true

Wake the dead
Serial sleeps slay with words instead
All gone

It's so awesome to see people actually dissect our lyrics like this! And just to clarify, the correct words are indeed 'slay with words unsaid.'

There are some... I guess you could say 'hidden' lyrics too... hidden by somewhat of a recording fluke. At the end of the bridge - after 'ears have longed to hear' - Tim whispers 'Be still' just as the guitar hits. We all still do that part live... at least I do. So if you see us play this song, watch me during that part. I'm not making it up =)

I think that most of these lyrics are based off the idea expressed in Ephesians 5:8-14

8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

Hmmm... i hear the tag bit near the end as 'save our souls FROM all our dreams come true'... i may be wrong, it's been known to happen! But that bit of the song just cuts me to the core. I don't wanna live my life according to just my will or just my desires, but to see God's Kingdom come on Earth... and I 'serial sleep' with the best of them! And just a side-note, the way that they sing that line is just the most incredible part of any song ever...i have been known to exaggerate but i do love it!

I have also seen the lyrics as... "...slay with words unsaid"... the song reminds me of, "Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober." Maybe it's a call to wake up in life, to not fall asleep like so many do as they fall into the monotiny of life. It's as if we are all being lulled into that tired state that we will ourselves not to be in. Anyway, this song is awesome.

teriyaki86 is right, it is "slay with words unsaid." this song Is about Christian people sleeping through life, and not being alive and awake for God. "slay with words unsiad" meaning...people are dying because you're not witnessing..."sing the song that hides behind your teeth"

This song is a great call for Christians to stop living our routine, lazy lives and actually go out there and fulfill the Great Comission. We "slay" people we know by neglecting to tell them about the freedom that comes with knowing Christ, and allowing them to spend eternity without Him.

I absolutely love the "Rise up oh sons of God And sing the song that hides behind your Teeth These ears have longed to hear All night long waiting for" part it reminds me that if we as Christians don't live out our lives for God that those people who are longing to hear or see what God is really about won't get that opportunity, because we've become complacent

Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
