most of the brine has got to boil away
most of the air has got to choke you
most of june i spent in jail again
i don't mean jail exactly
up in the pine tree
a red squirrel looked down at me
i am losing control of the language again
i am losing control of the language again

most of the things i used to hold on to
most of the things i used to say to you
most of the ways i knew around the local roads
are disappearing daily
high in the cottonwood
you were looking down at me and you sure looked good
your hair hanging down in the leaves
your neck tilted back to make a rainbow
i was losing control of the language again
i am losing control of the language again

General CommentMaybe It's about a primitive man (maybe in Africa or somewhere in Asia) and he is losing his way of life due to modernization?

General CommentI'm thinking that the meaning has to do with senility or having a stroke. Brine boiling away could signify the evaporation of preservative fluids, spending time in jail, but not exactly could mean that he's trapped in his mind, and then losing control of language is often a symptom of stroke victims. It seems like too direct of a interpretation for the mountain goats, but that's what i take away from it.

General CommentI think it's about like his life falling apart, at the same time a relationship isn't working out for him, and losing control of the language is him unable to understand how or why. as a lyricist I'm sure it must be very hard for him to not be able to say what he is feeling.
