you felt relief somewhere between the tree and its shade
when you go away heavens a distance not a place

General Comment"heaven's a distance, not a place" is a lyric from an iron and wine song called "two hungry blackbirds." i like the interaction between these two artists, especially the cover of "chelsea hotel #2" they played live together.

General CommentThat Iron & Wine song is actually quoting this one when it mentions "a rumor she heard/heaven's a distance not a place." Both great songs though, and IW does have a song called Carissa's Werid. Guess Sam's a stickler for spelling though.

My InterpretationSounds like a tragic recollection of someone's suicide by hanging between "the tree and its shade"

Heaven became a symbol of loss and grief to the singer, it just emphasizes the infinite gap between him and his late subject, a distance that is too far for anyone living to ever travel

    :-(
