I was afraid to be me
Be anything you want to be
I don't blame my week
For my not being able to speak
Clearly about things I've said before
And if it's light outside night will fall, night will fall
And if it's life it resolves, it resolves

Everywhere you are in a maze is a lie
Anywhere you are on a page you still go to the right
Anytime there's no ground below you you're in the sky
Anytime you're afraid it's gonna be alright

I was a flame in the night
I heard what I wanted to hear
And the moment I disapeared
I grew the size of all outside
Cuz I became one with the night
I became one with the night

And if it's real it's not all, it's not all there is
There's alot in what appears not to be there at all
And you can function as someone besides who you are

General Commenti also think this song is about being your true self and to not worry about things too much:
the first verse of the song (i was afraid to be me..) is about what he used to be and how he used to feel before he was comfortable with himself...

"everywhere you are in a maze is a lie"
everytime you're tangled up, you really aren't

"anywhere you are on a page you still go to the right"
you might not know where you are, but in english at least when you're reading a page you read from left to right... so basically even though you feel lost you will end up a step ahead from where you started

"anytime there's no ground below..." and "anytime you're afraid..." are pretty self-explanatory.

"i was a flame in the night, i heard what i wanted to hear"
a flame burns, could kinda be taken as if he was just angry all the time and he'd only listen to things that would please him, not what he NEEDED to hear.
    "and the moment i disappeared"
that cost him his life, or something he held close to his heart
"i grew the size of all outside, cuz i became one with the night"
losing whatever it was that he lost made him realize he was lying to himself.. he finally opened his mind and "let the spirits guide him" (sounds kinda like something john would say.. heh)

"and if it's real, it's not all there is. there's a lot in what appears not to be there at all"
there's always something more, even if you're in a bad situation. this theme comes back a lot in the album "shadows collide...." the song "in relief" is a really good example of that, and a lot of the songs from tracks 12 to 18 talk about that too.

"and you can function as someone besides who you are"
to me it seems kind of contradictory that he'd say that, since at the beginning of the song he sings "i was afraid to be me, be anything you want to be", which obviously means have no shame in what you are...

    and that's it, i think.

General CommentGood analysis dosedxbyyou, I enjoyed it.

Maybe the end, "and you can function as someone besides who you are", just re-affirms the song as a whole. He is saying that you can actually function as someone besides who you are - which is a scary thought. Yet - just because you can function in such a manner doesn't mean it is a good thing.

Who knows if this is at all right though - because if he is saying "you CAN'T function..." then that would obviously re-affirm the fact that you shouldn't try to be someone who are not - thus making my statement above obsolete.

Either way - I think the only important thing is that we think about these things and discuss them, I think the purpose of most music/art/expression is not to get the answer but to undertand the question. That is why I enjoy this website, and erveryones comments.

General Commentyou know the pat "any where you are on a page..." would that not be about not putting yourself on the margin and when the righter you go (cant put it any other way) the better you feel about yourself.
at the mo i feel that im quite close to the magin but i think thats to do with listening to too much pearl jam

I agree completely. Just because you can function besides who you are doesnt mean its good for you. listen to how the song, which was in major, ends on that minor chord right as he says that for the last time.

General Comment"and you can function as someone besides who you are"
I think that it means that you can function but you can't live. Computers and other machines function but without any sort of feelings. If you are pretending to be someone you aren't you can function but you are robbing yourself of all emotions and that is a scary thought.

General CommentIt's 'you can't funtion as someone besides who you are' - which is to say that no matter how hard you try to be someone your not, it will never be the real you.

General CommentThis song is amazingly beautiful I think its John just reflecting on himself and saying that others should accept who they are and what they are, and be happy with that because everything will be better. This song is amazing and it brings me to tears to listen to.
