Even in the quietest moments
I wish I knew what I had to do
And even though the sun is shining
Well I feel the rain, here it comes again, dear
And even when you showed me
My heart was out of tune
For there's a shadow of doubt that's not letting me find you too soon
The music that you gave me
The language of my soul
Oh Lord, I want to be with you.
Won't you let me come in from the cold?

Don't you let the sun fade away
Don't you let the sun fade away
Don't you let the sun be leaving
Won't you come to me soon

And even though the stars are listening
And the ocean's deep, I just go to sleep
And then I create a silent movie
You become the star, is that what you are, dear?
Your whisper tells a secret
Your laughter brings me joy
And a wonder of feeling I'm nature's own little boy
But still the tears keep falling
They're raining from the sky
Well there's a lot of me got to go under before I get high

Don't you let the sun disappear
Don't you let the sun disappear
Don't you let the sun be leaving
No, you can't be leaving my life
Say that you won't be leaving my life
Say that you won't be leaving my life
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Lord, won't you come and get into my life
Lord, won't you come and get into my life
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Lord, don't go

And even when the song is over
Where have I been, was it just a dream?
And though your door is always open
Where do I begin, may I please come in, dear?

I've always felt that Roger Hodgson was plagued with depression. His songs often refer to the rain, the sun disappearing, tears, and cold. He is always yearning for a happiness that someone else can provide him. Great, epic song with tremendous feeling.

I think, even though this song has strong connotations to a romantic scene, that roger also has a close relationship with nature, and he may be illustrating his souls feeling of comfort within nature, when life plays it's part, loss of love, or missing something that you love.

To put this song into my own life, it refers to how not even nature can make things clear for me at times. Even when the commotion or not udnerstanding something is gone, and you know what to do as such, you still don't know where you are going. I think it refers to a cycle, like the cycle of nature.

'And even though the stars are listening And the ocean's deep, I just go to sleep', refers to his mind being weary and nature serving as a kind of cradle for him when his mind becomes too much to handle.

I think it refers to how, we let go of our cycle when we focus so much on our emotions and figuring out where we ahve to go, what we have to do, who we need to be with. 'dont let the sun fade away' may refer to how he urges not to let go of the simple truthful cycle of life.

and even when the song is over was it just a dream - this for me shows strong connotations to our minds thoughts interaction with nature. When the song of our minds disappears, was it just a dream? What is all of these thoughts? are they just concepts?

I think in this song, Roger illustrates how simple life really is, in nature, and that we follow a path, of coming to terms with our perceptions of things.

    I dunno, my interpretation.

Rodger Hodgson said of the lyrics, "It's kind of a dual love song - it could be to a girl or it could be to God."

    My Interpretation

This is a song about a person having a crisis in faith hoping that his invisible silent god will talk to him finally and show him it is real and not just make belief

I think the previous two posts are on the right track. I, too, have sensed some depression in the lyrics, as well as a strong link to nature. I've also thought that the singer was referencing his search for his Creator. He say's "there a shadow of doubt that's not letting me find you too soon". I think his depression is a mental roadblock to his finding his Creator. The lyric "don't you let the sun fade away" could be a reference to truth about Him getting lighter as the day dawns and conversely, as the sun sets, it gets darker. He expressess beautifully the connection that should exist between our appreciation for nature and spiritual things. I love this song.

Look I'm working on about 15 miller lites right now but i still think this is a dude who has a girl that likes him but he can't get out of his own way. much like all of you he is over thinking everything. She is trying to just love him but he has to look deeper into everything she says or does." Even though your door is always open where do I begin may I please come in dear." Stop being a miserable depressed idiot and go to the girl that is trying to give her heart to you. Sorry but you don't refer to God as dear

This song and album about is enlightenment, when you seek life after this life you take to the sky. Set sail to the land that is unchartered.. Call the man a fool, but he calls you out of your sleep in this reality for a greater reality and you get to become mother nature’s little boy. Just take a drink from the fountain that was not made from the hand of man. And you ask yourself where have I been? It’s the journey for your footsteps alone.

    My Opinion

The song seems ultimately to be about being in your head to much and not living in the moment.

Maybe Mr. Hodgson wrote about a lost love and/or loneliness after the relationship and how to conduct himself during a relationship.

To try to keep from a dark-place he convinces himself and the listener to “Don’t you let the sun fade away” which is mentioned in many other artists melancholy songs; The Band’s -It makes no difference. And Elton John’s - Don’t let the sun go-down on me... are a couple I can think of.

Supertramp is a superb band and Hodgson is a brilliant writer, composer and instrumentalist. The other musicians are great as-well! I hope they tour the states soon.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
