"To Hell With Poverty" as written by and Dave/burnham Allen....
In my arms we shall begin with none of the rocks well there's no charge
In this land right now some are insane a million charge
To hell with poverty we'll get drunk on cheap wine
To hell with poverty the check will arrive we'll turn the boast again
To hell with poverty the check will arrive we'll turn to boast again
In my arms we shall begin with none of the rocks and there's no charge
In this land right now some are insane a million charge
To hell with poverty we'll get drunk on cheap wine
To hell with poverty

General CommentYou have to keep Go4's sence of sarcasm in mind when listening to this song. The line "To hell with poverty", which reflects the frustration of the working classes, is followed by "we'll get drunk on cheap wine" which reflects how they contribute to the same system that they are so frustrated with. The paycheck returns to the corporations just a couple of days after it arrives, and the worker still believes he is rebeling against the system.

General Comment"To hell with poverty / We'll get drunk on cheap wine" are my favourite Gang of Four lyrics. They're good outside the context of the song, but with that bass backbone they undid my head a few times. Granted, I was drinking cheap wine when I first heard the song... and couldn't afford a cab ride home, so I was waiting for the early bus. To hell with poverty.

General CommentI really love to listen to this song just before going to work.
In a few words, they tell how it is trying to get pieces of happiness while being seemingly condemned to stupid jobs and small lodgings and hard discounters...
That said with perfect irony : "To hell with poverty / We'll get drunk on cheap wine"
I saw another version of the lyrics, I'll get it and submit it.

General CommentHere's the other version I found for this song :
"in my arms we shall begin
    we're not on the rocks
    well there’s no charge
    in this land right now
some are insane and they're in charge
    to hell with poverty
we’ll get drunk on cheap wine
    to hell with poverty
    the cheque arrives
    it's in the post again
    to hell with poverty
    the cheque arrives
    it's in the post again
in my arms we shall begin
we're not on the rocks and there’s no charge
    in this land right now
some are insane and they're in charge
    to hell with poverty
we’ll get drunk on cheap wine
    to hell with poverty"
I'll just add : what a terrific bass work on this song !
