I hid myself from failure and fear
O my dear you're a threat to the bad in us all
They tell themselves that each word from your lips
Or the grace in your eyes overcomes any fall
Over the twilight you're listening for me
Darling, go to sleep
Cradled by moonlight, I'm dreaming we'll be
Loved so deep
Floating and fighting, like a kite on a string
Till you cut through my tether and changed everything
From the sky you looked small, but I loved you the same
So I darted back quickly to spell out your name
And when they say that I'm just a terrible kite
You'll tell them you're proud of my loveless flight
Don't hide yourself inside till I'm old
O my dear you're a threat to the bad we all see
I'm beside myself for the touch of your lips
Or the grace of your eyes that can see good in me
Over the twilight you're listening for me
Darling, go to sleep
Cradled by moonlight, I'm dreaming we'll be
Loved so deep
Floating and fighting, like a kite on a string
Till you cut through my tether and changed everything
From the sky you looked small, but I loved you the same
So I darted back quickly to spell out your name
And when they say that I'm just a terrible kite
You'll tell them you're proud of my loveless flight

General Commenti've always pictured this song as a hauntingly beautiful, poetic expression of why he loves her. he describes what he was like before he met her ("i hid myself from failure and fear") and how he was almost touching his potential but wasn't quite getting there ("floating and fighting like a kite on a string"). falling in love with her changed everything, and set him free to be what he was meant to be.

this may be reading too much into it, but i get the sense that "when they say that i'm just a terrible kite" means that he's challenging the status quo, unafraid to fly free like a bird when most of the people in this world are kites, tethered down by strings. of course he's a terrible kite, because he isn't a kite at all---anymore. falling for this girl has completely transformed him into something wonderful and revolutionary. "you cut through my tether and changed everything"

it's incredibly poetic, it really is.

General Commentthese are probably my favorite copeland lyrics, and probably my favorite song by them next to coffee. I guess in some way it's about someone that loves you and you love back that is proud of you regardless of what others say.

General CommentIt's actually "marvelous flight" not "loveless flight"

General Commentbeginning of the album is awesome
    and the end is awesome
this song just seems so out of place... right in the middle

reading the lyrics, def makes me like it more though

guess it's good they put it in the middle
else i wouldn't listen to it

General CommentThis is definitely is one of my favourite songs on the album. If you close your eyes during the accordian parts it feels like you are in stereotypical France.

General Commentto be brutally honest, this song really makes me want to rip out my earsdrums and throw them in the trash. and, i'm not just saying this to be incredibly mean. the lyrics are beautiful; however, the actual music lacks the down-to-earth essence that is usually present in their writing. something is definitely missing in this song. i can't even articulate it. but i know, i'm extremely disappointed.

General CommentListening to this song in the car earlier today, I decided I feel this song is about being dumped by a girl even though she cares deeply for him. People around her don't feel he is good enough for her.

And when they say that I'm just a terrible kite
You'll tell them you're proud of my marvelous flight.

General CommentI was reading a book and it was speaking about kites in relation to relationships. (It was a book about a man's courting "adventures" with his wife)
He said something about God and relationships and the string to the kite being the only thing... like knowledge or something.
grrr I wish I had that book with me. It explained a lot in this song. I had heard the song before I read the book and read that part and this song suddenly made sense.
