"Moral" as written by and Gary Anthony James Webb....
These new romantics are oh so boring
I could swear I've been there once or twice before
I should grow wings and just forget the club
You know the legends never wanted to be me
For too erratic to be OK so?
If you're concerned well I don't care
You play games, you play safe
Me I just sighed with relief

Matthew's mother. The change disturbs me
You've everybody's friend. Age, I suppose
Just like religion you're going nowhere
Like your so explicit clothes onto the floor
On those occasions when everything broke down
Including you and me

See the boy, see the girl
The exhibition is now over

General CommentNuman is shaking the stick at the whole New Romantic movement that was in full swing in 1981. Not sure who Matthew's mother is. Funny thing is that the movement seemed to come to a stand still just a year later.

General CommentI hated this song, mostly because it's somewhat a duplicate. I know he's done the same thing before in Tubeway Army with Fadeout 1930/Out of Sight, but I loved Metal so much, and absolutely hated the fact that Numan crapped all over its melody by quasi-copying it for Moral.

General CommentMansion. you're not giving Gary enough credit. He's a pretty smart fellow and in this really shows. Gary's also perhaps a little fed up at this point with not being given his due. So he lets the pretenders have a bit of a lashing.

In my mind at least, it is absolutely obvious that he very intentionally recalls 'Metal' here. He is saying to all the New Romantic poseurs that he's been there already and done that. He brings up the 'Metal' melody but cleverly submerges it into the background making a whole new atmosphere out of it. The recalling of the 'Metal' melody is crucial to the point he is making, and he makes that point brilliantly (IMHO of course).
