"Please Please Please" as written by and Adam Olenius....
Please please please
No more melodies
They lack impact, they're petty
They've been made up already
Please please please
No more maladies
I'm so tired of crying
You'd think I was a siren
But me and everybody's on the sad same team
And you can hear our sad brain screaming

Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady
Steady going nowhere

Please please please
No apologies
At best they buy you time
Until you next step out of line
Please please please
No more remedies
My method is uncertain
It's a mess but it's working
And maybe if you tried it out
You won't like it when you're crying out

Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady, steady
Steady going nowhere

Please please please
No more melodies
They lack impact, they're petty
They've been made up already
Please please please
No more maladies
I'm so tired of crying
You'd think I was a siren
But me and everybody's on the sad same team and
You can hear our sad brain screaming

Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady, steady, steady, steady
Steady going nowhere

Please please please
No apologies
At best they buy you time
Until you next step out of line
Please please please
No more remedies
My method is uncertain
It's a mess but it's working
And maybe if you want to try it out
You won't like it when you're crying out

Give me something familiar
Somethin' similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady, steady
Steady going nowhere

General Commentahh i get it now.

though for me its kind of mocking society... the chorus mostly...
    "Give us something familiar
    Something similar
    To what we know already
    That will keep us steady
    Steady, steady, steady, steady
    Steady going nowhere"

reminds me of people who are afraid of change, but feel trapped by routine. a little hypocritical, isnt it? but so is life.

    love its truth.

General CommentYou can picture the record execs trying to get her to make a hit by writing songs like some of her old stuff, which will of course, keep them steady (read: $$$$), but keep her stagnant as an artist, "going nowhere"... They don't want melodies, to prissy...no maladies, too down and depressing...just mainstream hit type songs...well, screw off a holes! Great stuff...

Lyric CorrectionI have always interpreted the word "siren" much differently in the two lines that read:

    I'm so tired of crying/
    you'd think I was a siren

In Greek mythology, the Sirens were three dangerous bird-women, portrayed as seductresses who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. So Fiona may be stating here that some people assume that her songs are bound to cause disaster. This might be because they're not commercial enough for the recording company, but there are often situations in our own lives where people may assume the worst about our motives the instant we open our mouths.

General Commenti love this, its like the ultimate "shut up" song, yeh i can see the idea of the music industry, especialy with, "me and everybody's on the sad same team..."
    bit.
    "I'm so tired of crying
You'd think I was a siren" such a great line, full of exhaustion and emotion, lik it could be about anything to do with people just apologising but nothing happening about it in the long run... i can totally relate to this interms of friendships. brilliant song

General CommentThe perfect song for those moments where you've basically given up and thought "wtf do you people want from me?"
    I heart this song.

General Commentyeah it does make sense to me now, the whole industry thing...a great song!
    my favourite line is

    "Please please please
    No apologies
At best they buy you time
Until you next step out of line"

i dont really get that song much, but i think its very deep...to me, its like when u dont belong in the world, whose basically divided into two categories, the "happy category" and the"sad team" fionas talking abt

General CommentLove the sentiments of this song: it's the music industry, but it could just as well be a jab at the film industry (How's about Spiderman 62!!), and the entertainment industry in general. What's artistic and original gets snuffed out or burned at the stake. But when the occasional exception comes along and becomes successful, the world goes ga-ga and wonders why it's taken so long. Before we go pointing fingers, all the film/music industry etc are giving us is what WE want, when we vote with our pocket book. So look yourself in the mirror tonight - do YOU want the same old same old, or are you ready for some ADVENTURE!

General Commentthis is one of my favourite songs of hers. i just love the way the tune jumps and jerks in the chorus, i feel like it emphasises the harsh demands of whoever fiona apple is referring to (yes, the music industry is very likely, but when i first hear this song i thought it was about a romantic relationship. no more cliched melodies, no more trivial maladies, no more insincere apologies, no more trying to fix me, but at the same time she knows like everyone else she just wants some familiarity/comfort)

i also just like "please please please". it's desperate and exhausted.
