"The Ocean" as written by and Ronald Ward....
Am I alone in this?
Never a night when I can sleep myself till day,
We must try to figure it out, figure it out,
It won't be that easy,

(We lost it somehow...)

You come over unannounced,
Silence broken by your voice in the dark,
I need you here tonight,
Just like the ocean needs the waves...

Oh the night becomes a space that's somewhere in between,
What I feel and what I'm told,
Sitting on the shore line trying to figure it out, figure it out,
To find out the meaning..

(and reach it somehow)

You come over unannounced,
Silence broken by your voice in the dark,
I need you here tonight,
Just like the ocean needs the waves...
Fall around me now,
And like stars that shine and brighten the way,
I need you here tonight just like this night it needs the rain.

The season has changed,
The wind, it blows colder now, colder now,
The clouds are raised,
The rain, it falls harder now, all around..

You come over unannounced,
Silence broken by your voice in the dark,
I need you here tonight,
Just like the ocean needs the waves
Fall around me now,
And like stars that shine and brighten the way,
I need you here tonight just like this night it needs the rain.

Over unannounced, silence broken by your voice in the dark,
I need you here tonight,
Just like the ocean needs the waves,
Just like the stars that fall around me now..

General Comment"It may be the need for something more to fill your life, which in Mae's case would be God."

mae is not a christian band. they've stated this specifically on their website. while i don't doubt that some of the band members have christian beliefs, i don't think that they mean for all of their songs to be interpreted in a religious way. i've seen a lot of people on this site try to connect the songs to god somehow. a lot of them could be interpreted that way, but i doubt that they were written with that connection in mind; if they had been, mae would've just come out and said they were a christian band.

anyways. this is a great song.

Anybody that's been in love and your significant other is not around or you just missed that person, you can relate to this and these words are no different.

General CommentI think he's talking about a relationship that's seen it's better days. There's something that's blocking them from being how they were, but when she's with him he realizes that he really needs her no matter what the problem. It's really sweet and I love the song. It's so beautiful.

General CommentI think that the couple in this song are still together and he is just showing how much he loves her by saying that he needs her there tonight. She makes everything better. This album could easily be the best album of 05.
