Dog of height in the trees
Won't you come down doggy
Such a sweet doggy
I brought you your dinner
My doggy i miss you kissing from my
I remember when i first got you doggy

But you lay there so still doggy
You lay there
So still

Dog who fell to the ground
Twisted your neck doggy
Don't look right doggy
The vet came with sutures
He said, Dave,
Hey, the doctor cannot save your dog

But I remember when I first got you, dog

You lay there so still, dog
You lay there so still

Dog of depth in the dirt
They buried you deep, doggy
You’re the best doggy
My friend has a doggy
She's a real nice dog
I wish you could chase her round my yard

I remember when I first got you, dog

But you lay there so still doggy
You lay there so still

General CommentWhen I first saw the lyrics to this song while listening to it, I cried for about an hour. It always breaks my heart when an animal dies, because they're just so loving and honest. I know that my dogs, too, will die someday and it just pierces me deep inside.
The lyrics of this song are especially saddening because you can see the process of the dog's end. First there's something wrong with him and the singer doesn't know what to do, he tries everything, thinking the dog can "come down" from whatever the matter is, but then the dog suddenly takes a fall and plunges into an irreversible dilemma. The singer is left helpless and is forced to cope with his friend's unfortunate end. Every pet owner knows that someday this will happen, but it's still a shock when it does. Afterward, all that is left are memories, and all you can do is grieve.

General CommentI'm pretty sure it says:

    The VET came with sutures
    He said Dave
The doctor cannot save YOUR dog

General Comment"I don't think this is about his dog. I think this is about him finding a dead dog perhaps." - I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you on that one, based off this lyric: "The vet came with sutures/He said, 'Dave, Hey, the doctor cannot save your dog.'"

My InterpretationI think everyone is taking this song too literally...
Did anyone find it odd that:
The dog somehow found its way high in a tree.
He's pleading for the dog to come down.
He went out to the forest to give his dog dinner.
The dog "slipping" or accidentally falling is not mentioned.
The song mentions a vet, but he says ultimately the "doctor" could not save the dog.

I interpret this song as a friend or loved one committing suicide, with the dog acting as a metaphorical representation. In the "real" story, avey brings his friend dinner because he knows he/she is depressed, and finds them on a high surface threatening to jump. He tries to get them down, but he/she jumps, breaks their neck, and the doctor cannot do anything to help.

The line "I remember when I first got you, dog" could be referring to when they met. The lyrics about seeing another dog and wishing they could chase them around could simply mean that avey is still thinking about his late friend.

He probably used a dog as symbol because of the innocent connotation of the animal or to convey the special relationship they had ("You're the best doggy" - You're the best friend).

General CommentThis song is amazing. The meaning is obvious, and you can almost hear the childhood innocence in the singer's voice.

General CommentHow unbearably sad. When I hear this song, I picture an out-of-focus sunset in autumn.
