"Second Coming" as written by and Michael Bruce Alice Cooper....
I couldn't tell if the bells are getting louder
The songs they ring I finally recognize
I only know Hell is getting hotter
The Devil's getting smarter all the time

And it would be nice to walk upon the water
To talk again to angels on my side

Time is getting closer
I read it on a poster
Fanatical exposers on corners prophesied

It would be nice to walk upon the water
To talk again to angels at my side
I just come back to show you all my words are golden
So have no gods before me, I'm the light

General CommentThis song was recorded in the early 1970's and a prelude to the Ballad of Dwight Fry. It appears the 2 songs need to be examined together. My interpretation is that a homeless urban character is falling into a prophetic awakening which is perceived by others as mental illness. In fact, the character is given a 6th sense and forsees the 2nd Coming of Christ. I saw another "post" stating AC became a Christian in 1999. He was a struggling Christian for many years prior to that. I believe this song - a smokingly powerful song musically as well as lyrically - is evidence of Alice's inner-convictions when he was in his early 20's.

General CommentInteresting, Beardawg. I'd never even considered that it could be directly related to Ballad of Dwight Fry.

When I looked up the lyrics, I thought it was about Jesus, in exile on Earth for some reason. He's still driven to protect the human race from the Devil, but he can't. Or it could be about a mentally ill person who gets the delusion that he/she is the reincarnation of Jesus. (Funnily enough, I'm not offended by this, despite the fact that I am a Christian myself...maybe because there isn't any direct bashing of the religion at all in it.)

General CommentWhat does it mean? The title of the song is "Second Coming" and one of the lines says: "I just come back to show you all my words are golden
So have no gods before me, I'm the light ." What more do we need to know?

General CommentI’ve always taken Second Coming, along with The Ballad of Dwight Fry, and Sun Arise, as a trilogy. Second Coming is the character (Alice?) as a street corner prophet. The man is viewed as insane, and sent to an asylum (The Ballad of Dwight Fry), where he breaks out, but is soon recaptured. Eventually he is rehabilitated and released (Sun Arise). Of all the songs on Love It To Death, these three are the only ones that segue into each other without a break. So that’s my take.
