So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
For about four years I've hated this town
So much I just want to get out
Since graduation, was long ago
Please somebody get me out of this hole
Cuz I don't want to get stuck in here
When I am 34, just talkin bout high school years
No I don't wanna be there
I feel so stuck right here
back and forth, side to side, oh my dear
My foot to the floor
I will drive to the place
Where I can kick it with friends through the night
A place we'll talk about now and the past what the future holds
Hangin out with not much to do
Just aimless with each other is what we do
Cuz this ain't where it's at
My friend would second that
And I got to admit sometimes it's pretty sad
But it's Like we're our own brat pack
We're always kickin back
Nobody can take that
And that is that, it's like it's all we have
Comon I say, Oh Oh get on the floor
Dance till you got no more
I know it's there somewhere
Don't worry I'll be there to rock the party all night
To rock into this night our fists in the air
Fightin a good fight
Cuz we were singing along to Peter Gabriel's sledgehammer song
You know it's clear that tonight we belong in this place
So I stand back to reflect in this town I hate
At least just for a second I think I might stay
This ain't where it's at
My friend would second that
And I got to admit sometimes it's pretty sad
But it's Like we're our own brat pack
We're always kickin back
Nobody can take that
And that is that
So I'll run away to the hopes that I have
But still I fall asleep in the arms of my past
And when I wake so helpless of thinking of that
Just lay back down, again everyday
So maybe later today I'll know
What I will do with my life as I know it
Maybe for now I'll drive back to that place where I belong
And hope to God it hasn't changed
This ain't where it's at
My friend would second that
And I got to admit sometimes it's pretty sad
But it's Like we're our own brat pack
We're always kickin back
Nobody can take that
This ain't where it's at
My friend would second that
And I got to admit sometimes it's pretty sad
But it's Like we're our own brat pack
We're always kickin back
Nobody can take that, it's like it's all we have
