Dear cousin,
I got your letter
It was more than I thought I deserved
Well she sounds perfect, all I dream of
And I dream about so much it is absurd
But when I get there and she sees me
I'll be impressed if she does not run screaming

My kind of love is an ugly love
But it's real and it lasts a long, long time

I had a thought while I was sleeping
And I dreamed about a place for us to rest
Eternity under the old oak tree
But I go too far I guess
Maybe I'll think about tomorrow
And maybe I can get her to stay that long

'Cause my kind of love is an ugly love
But it's real and it lasts a long, long time

And if she finds me repulsive
She wouldn't be the first to wretch
Well I decided one day long ago
I was never gonna be the greatest catch
And if she cares about the car I drive
Then she can get in hers
The moment I arrive

'Cause my kind of love is an ugly love
But it's real and it lasts a long, long time

It's kind of a humorous song, about an ugly guy who hasn't had much luck with relationships getting set up for a date. He hopes that this will be the one, that she won't run away screaming and that maybe they'll be together for eternity. However, if she cares about superficial stuff like the car he drives, he won't have her.

My interpretation of this song is that his love is different to normal love he can't show it like most people and sometimes suffers in love because of this. I think its basically trying to say that allthough he may not be able to show his love because he has low self esteem his love is real.

I think this song is ultimately about circumstances. Sometimes love is a painful mukety muck of situations that are just inconvenient and the singer realizes this. The singer is not the best choice or the greatest "catch"....but what he is offering is an ugly and inconvenient love filled with loyalty and sincerity.

this song is absolutely beautiful. it's somewhat sad, but very honest just like most of the eels' music. it's one of my favorite eels songs.

I do not think, that it is only about an "ugly guy", being a loner. To me, that interpretation is too superficial.. I would go so far and say, that this "ugliness" is inside. He does not believe, that he is worth of anything. He seems to mess up everything, thinking, he has a big "L" tattooed on his head. He is suffering under serious self-confidential problems, here. Still, he knows, he can love and wants to do so - but it seems as if everybody's too good for him, because of his inner ugliness, just as i said. Just my interpretation, anyhow.

I think the "ugly love" he's talking about is loving for someone despite imperfections and for who they are inside. Maybe he thinks it's "ugly" because he's never had the same kind of love reciprocated. I kind of agree with taqtraeumerin that he does have low self-esteem and problems with self-confidence, but that it's justified. Maybe he was probably shunned and he automatically just associated it with his appearance.

About the lines: "And if she cares about the car I drive Well she can get in hers the moment I arrive"

it could mean that he expects her to love him for himself and not because of material things such as the car.. Id not be surprised if this song reflected on the personal life of the singer (not meaning that he is repulsive). As in: his love is not happy, its kinda sad, and as such "ugly love" - but everlasting. Great piano.

Jesus Christ Loves You You can experience God's love and forgiveness ... thanxs Google ads † here's real Ugly Love for you all! there you go let's buy some religion propaganda, let's find some good faith on the net shall we :')

to me the song is about all of the things quoted above, I think its a description of how one sees himself, failures leading to much negative thoughts. this guy (or E himself) might find himself repulsive and not one of the beautiful people in the first place but with that he seems to look at what he has to offer has something so rotten that it can't be shared to turn into the purest love form and so all of its happiness too.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
