How many roads must a man walk down
before you can call him a man?
And how many seas must a white dove sail
before she can sleep in the sand?
And how many times must the cannon balls fly
before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

How many years must a mountain exist
before it's washed to the sea?
And how many years must some people exist
before they're allowed to be free?
And how many times must a man turn his head
pretending that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

How many times can a man look up
before he can see the sky?
And how many ears must one man have
before he can hear people cry?
And how many deaths will it take till he knows
that too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

My InterpretationDis song is no doubt a protest song composed by Bob Dylan during the Vietnam War.Although it does not refer to any particular event it asks some obvius questions, the answers to which are infact in front of us but we choose to push them to the oblivion.

How many roads must a man walk
    down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, an' how many times must the cannon balls fly
    Before they're forever banned?

In these lines it is asked that after walking through how many roads of injustice, oppresion and violence and tolerating everything dat cums in the way will a man be recognized as a man indeed, who has absorbeb it all. It's also asked dat after sailing through how many seas in search of a land untouched by the war mongrels will a creature like a dove find wat he is looking for to sleep in peace in the absence of the sounds of bombardment. Then,it is also asked dat how many times will 'cannon balls' be used indiscriminately and made to 'fly' high in the sky, only to drop down to claim innocent lives before they are banned by the authorities.

The answer to all dis in the words of the lyricist Dylan is 'blowing in the wind' denoting that it is so obvious dat it's right on our face like the wind itself but we are too ignorant to even take a notice bcoz we are so lost in our own malicious motives.

Yes, an' how many years can a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
Yes, an' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, an' how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?

it is asked dat for how much time will landscapes like mountains exist when lands are ravaged by war activities before they are ultimately washed away as ashes by the water of the seas.It is also asked dat for how many years can the prisoners of war exist under the ill-human treatment and injustice meted out to them under captivity and it is questioned when they will be set free. The poet also questions dat for how long can common people like you and me turn our head away from reality choosing to be ignorant to the fact, all in the pretention dat nothing wrong is happening.
Dylan again points out dat the answer to all dis is perhaps 'blowing in the wind' and present just right there in front of our very eyes.

Yes, an' how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, an' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, an' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?

Here,it's asked dat how many times does one hav to look up to find out the sky amidst the dark blanket of smoke from the bombs and how many ear does a man need,to hear the cry of the innocent victims of violence an be a litle conscious on his own.It is also asked dat wat number of lives would hav to
face extinction to make us realize dat the time has come to be bothered about the aftermath of war, hatred and violence.
The answer still remains 'blowing in the wind' left to be realized and recognized by us only.
