Somewhere someone puts all of their faith in a fast car,
California opened your legs.
Well, honey, your feet, they ain't as pretty as you think.
My teeth are all still crooked on the inside.

Could you please leave all your clothes on,
and let me sweat this out?
I can only see you naked.
You're not in the car,
you're not spending all your mother's money, 'cause that makes you feel secure.

I can only see you naked, 'cause that's all you're good for.

I'm sure they all agree.
They take you home to help make you forget about me.
when they turn to sleep,
you're wide awake,
you spend the whole night staring up at the ceiling.
Don't justify, now you're no better than Justine.

Could you please leave all your clothes on,
and let me sweat this out?
I can only see you naked.
You're not in the car,
you're not spending all your mother's money 'cause that makes you feel secure.

I can only see you naked.
You said it was suicide
on the Fourth of July.
I say it saved my life.
I just wish you had died.

Could you please leave all your clothes on,
let me sweat this out.
I can only see you naked.
You're not in that car.
You're not spending all your mother's money, because that makes you feel secure.

I can only see you naked,
that's all you're good for.

General Commenton the live EP "And Now I Hope You're Alright" this song reads:

    You said it was suicide
    on the Fourth of July.
I say it saved my life.
AND NOW I HOPE YOU'RE ALRIGHT.

It does, trust me, it's the name of the album. Is there another version where he says, "I just wish you had died." It'd be interesting if he changed that lyrics, because that would seem to reflect his pre-If Work Permits mindset. After Nate wrote If Work Permits, he said he had something of an epiphany about the value in "Just being alright" and not being mad at this girl anymore.

Pretty incredible song. Another example of how this band is the best at making a simple song so brilliantly complex.

    Cheers.

General Commentmyphilosophy - Nate has been singing "I just wish you had died" lately, and said it was a reflection of how he felt now.

General CommentGreat song i think the meaning is somewhat obvious

I believe this song is about a fairly "easy" girl that someone may have fallen in love with and then she ran out on him and went to california and that she is very insecure and always doing things she shouldnt be. Even though he was in love with her and mad that she left and may sometimes wish her back he realizes that theres no way that she is the type of girl that he can have in his life and he can "only see her naked cause thats all shes good for"

General Commenthaha. I am aware he changed it. I like the "I just wish you had died" a lot better. Bitterness makes the world go 'round!

here is a link to a youtube video where he sings the original version, if you are interested:

General CommentI love this song like no other. It's like he's realizing that his relationship with this girl is getting him nowhere, and finally admits to himself that "seeing her naked" is really the only "good" part of the relationship.

My InterpretationI used to think it was also about an easy girl but after a few plays I realized it's not quite like that.

To me, the song tells the story of two lovers who ran away, thus the faith in fast cars. I think he realized, once they got to California and slept together that he didn't really love her--didn't even like her, actually. It sounds like he seriously regrets it. This explanation makes more sense with the lyrics--well, at least to me, it does. For example, "your not spending all your mother's money 'cause that makes you feel secure" sounds like she took money from her mother before running away and she has it all carefully counted so it will last.

I can really see it all playing out in my head... A car driving on the freeway at night, the camera zooms in and you see two people looking angry but not speaking. A few flashbacks to the "happy days" and then back to the car. Our couple's sitting in a motel room. He's at the end of the bed with his head in his hands and she's propped up against the headboard, arms crossed. She starts poking him with her foot...

    Yeah. It's a great song.
