I've got a baby's clean conscience.
I walk around with my head off

And in the state of the big sky
The ground holds on to my grandpa's
I'm always walking back one pace
I'm walking back, head off
And in the state of the black feet
The dirt stores much in my familiy
I'm always walking that one way
That dirt stores much in my family

I blew off my laundry
And my clothes hold on to the dirt, see
And in the state of the black feet
I've got a babys clean conscience
I walk around with my shoes off
And the ground holds on to my bad walk

General CommentFirst of all stop being over analytical douche nozzles. Clearly "state of the big sky" and "state of the black feet" refers to Montana since both are blatant characteristics of that state.

"I walk around with my shoes off, the ground holds onto my bad walk"

Go outside with your shoes off and run around. I bet you won't be walking straight, it hurts.

Having a baby's clean consience means there's nothing troubling your mind and walking around with your head off clearly is supporting that.

As for the rest of it, who knows and who cares. It's a good song but it is just a demo, I could make some blanket vague statements and give it to several people and have them tell me what it means and not one would tell me the same thing. As for MM/Ugly Casa unless he tells you explicitly what the song means good luck but let me tell you that more times than not it's Occam's Razor and you're just over analyzing the song.

It's really simple why they don't tell you the meanings and every type of artist that panders to a diverse demographic does the same thing. It's bad for business.

General CommentI am amazed that i am the only one commenting on this beautiful piece of art. I think that this song is about Isaac or anyone for that matter- who know that they are going to hell (or realizes they arent the best person) but still views their conscience as being "baby clean." It rocks.

General Commenthmm i think when your young you remember walking around bare foot through the grass off the lawn to the concrete and on the dirt. then when you go back and take off your shoes and you walk around and you feel all the feels and you get all the memories. i think he was drunk.

    General CommentI've got a baby's clean conscience.
I walk around with my head off-- NOT THINKING

And in the state of the big sky
The ground holds on to my grandpa's
THESE TWO LINES-- THIS SETS THE TONE. BIG SKY=BIG SCHEME OF THINGS.. THE GROUND LITERALLY DOES HOLD HIS GRANDPAS THEREFORE HE IS RELATING THE GROUND/DIRT TO HIS FAMILY.
I'm always walking back one pace-- NEVER LEARNING HIS LESSON-INSTEAD DIGRESSING AND WALKING BACKWARD.
I'm walking back, head off- HE'S AIMLESS AND NEVER LEARNING.
And in the state of the loud feet
The dirt stores much in my familiy- NOT LITERAL DIRT THIS TIME, IT REPRESENTS HIS DIRTY DEEDS, THE BAD THAT HE HAS DONE AND HOW THIS REFLECTS ON HIS FAMILY.
I'm always walking that one way- HE JUST KEEPS WALKING BACKWARDS NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES IT HAPPENS.
That dirt stores much in my family- FAMILY RELECTION AGAIN, MORE FOR THE SONG THAN MEANING.

2 I blew off my laundry
1 And my clothes hold on to the dirt, see--
SEE THE NUMBERS I PUT INFRONT OF THE LINES, TRY AND THINK OF IT IN THAT ORDER WITH THE "SEE" LISTEN AT THE END OF THE LINE REFERING BACK TO THE FIRST. HE BLEW OFF HIS FAMILY, THE CLOTHES ARE FAMILY AS THEY HOLD THE DIRT.

And in the state of the loud feet- I SEE LOUD FEET MEANING STUMBLING KIND OF DRUNKEN HOW WHEN YOU DONT HAVE YOUR LIFE TOGETHER PEOPLE SAY YOU ARE STUMBLING THROUGH LIFE. STUMBLING IS LOUD.
I've got a babys clean conscience- IF INFACT THE STUMBLING IS A REFERENCE TO DRINKING IT WOULD MAKE SENSE WITH THIS LINE-- HE DOESNT HAVE TO FEE BAD WHEN HE IS DRUNK, SO HE DRINKS TO FEEL CLEAN, LIGHT.

I walk around with my shoes off- CARELESS AND UNCAUTIONARY
And the ground holds on to my bad walk - HIS FAMILY HOLDS ON AND LOVES HIM REGARDLESS... OBVIOUSLY WITH THIS SONG, THAT BOTHERS HIM, HE FEELS BAD.

ITS KIND OF A BAD CIRCLE, HE FEELS BAD FOR THE THINGS THAT REFLECT ON HIS FAMILY, SO HE DRINKS TO FEEL BETTER, BUT WHEN DRINKING HE REFLECTS BAD ON HIS FAMILY ALL OVER AGAIN. SOME OF THE COMMENTS FOR THIS SONG LISTED WITH THE ARTIST AS MODEST MOUSE SAY THAT ITS GOT A SOOTHING AND CALM OR INNOCENT SOUND TO IT. ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SOOTHING, CALM, OR INNOCENT. ITS VERY SORROWFUL AND REGRETFUL. YOU ARENT GOING TO BE UPBEAT AND BOUNCY WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE HE OBVIOUSLY FELT WHILE WRITING THIS SONG.

    General CommentRuthlessvixen,
to bad your mostly wrong bitch.
    just kidding but fa' real.
Big Sky = heaven which holds his GRANDPAS... no apostrophe.
i'm always walking back one pace. meaning getting nowhere fast.
the dirt stores much of my family.
    think about it...
THEY'RE DEAD! you're looking TOOOOO far into it.
I'm always walking that one way - He keeps going in the same direction he's always gone in.

The ground holds onto my bad walk - he is secured by his family.
your last paragraph made no sense either. it's just a bunch of words. you use reflects wrongly and you're pretentious. you act like you know everything about what Isaac meant when he wrote the song. like you are Isaac. You could be but probably aren't because Isaac doesn't even analyze his songs that deeply.

General CommentThis song hits close to home for me. I think "state of the big sky", is Montana, the Big Sky State. Also I don't think the lyrics are "state of the loud feet". They are 'state of the Blackfeet." Northwest Montana is Blackfeet Indian country. I read somewhere that as a child, Isaac spent sometime living on a commune in Sunburst, MT, which is just east of the Blackfeet Rez. I think it's about his youth and the time he spent there.

General CommentAnother thought is that it is from the perspective of an indian living on the reservation. The lines, "the ground holds on to my grandpas", and "the dirt stores much of my family" give me the impression of deep history on the land and lots of death.
