By the banks of old Poughkeepsie
My love swam with me
Nature's tender bones are breathing
Lungs, each breaths, each breathes and

Have you felt it?
Have you?
I've felt it too
And so have you

Summer day, she stays by her window
Her saggy flesh it sweeps the floor
Down her steps and through her hallway
Coming out her door and

Have you seen it?
Have you?
I've seen that too
And so have you

Now man holds hands, head, neck, shaped cobweb
White oil fills each pore
Again down your steps and through your hallway
Jumping out your door and

Have you done it?
Have you?
I've done that too
And so have you

Well, love me tender
V-v-v-v-v-v-iva Las Vegas
And hounddog
All shook up
Heartbreak hotel
Lawdy, Miss Clawdy
Blue moon
Blue suede shoes and

Have you heard it?
Have you?
I've heard that too
And I know for sure that so have you

General Commenti grew up about half an hour north of poughkeepsie ... while it's not one of the most amazing cities ever, it's got it's own charm, being on the hudson river and all. i'm not sure why he decided to write a song about it, tho ...

General CommentThis was the first Devendra song I'd ever heard. It's so mystical and magical. Love the v-v-v's.

General CommentI have lived in Poughkeepsie in the past and live about 5 minutes away now. He pronounces it wrong. He says PO-kip-ssee when it's really more like P-kip-see. The "-ough" is more or less silent. Yeah, I'm just being relly anal though. Cool song. The banks of Poughkeepsie are a very beautiful place (if you ignore some of the pollution around). Wouldn't really recommend swimming their with your love though. The Hudson River is not really known for it's swimming. It has gotten a lot better though, as far as pollution.

General CommentI was born in Poughkeepsie! Now I live in Newburgh, NY. Anyway, Devendra Banhart can pronounce any word as he pleases because to me he is a lyrical god. This song, along with 'This Beard Is For Siobhan,' got me hooked on Banhart.

I've always pronounced it "Puh-kip-ssee"... although I tend to call it "Pough-town"

General CommentI live in the Hudson Valley, around New Paltz area. I've been to Poughkeepsie a number of times. It is a cool place, but i'm not sure why he chose to write about it either. Good song though.

General CommentFor some reason this song feels very sexual.
    Creeps me out, too.
    But I love Devendra.

General Commentall sounds very hallucinogenic -- especially the hooks.

    "have ya felt it?...
    have ya seen it?...
    have ya done it?...
    have ya heard it?..."

    (compare to: "are you experienced?")
