"Promise to Me" as written by and Ross Vannelli Maurice White....
There was a child who was born to be the one who comforts me
Who was born strong and brave and holy, loves me rough and tenderly
Can it be understood the reasons why you belong to me?

I need the steady of you and I'd give you anything
That i could cut with sweet precision from beneath my tender skin
There is a way, there is a way that you could save me from this

Would you promise to be kind?
Promise to be kind

The wind is ever faithful and it carves a solemn sword
Right through the hearts of the ungrateful who are always wanting more
There is a way, there is a way that you can help me

With the ramparts built so high
All the soldiers stuck inside
But this will fall away in time
If you promise to be kind
Promise to be kind
Promise to be kind

General Commentsuch a beautiful song. the piano and her voice make it feel so soft and heartfelt, and reassuring.

General Commenti feel this song is about not wanting somebody to break up with you. you can give him anything and everything, and "there is a way that you can help me" by promising to be kind and not hurt you... but then she sort of knows that it is hopeless and it's sort of a plea... and "the ungrateful.. are always wanting more." It's really is a beautiful song.

General Commenti think it's about falling in love.
personally, i know i always fall for guys that end up treating me like crap, so a promise to be kind would be totally awesome & unexpected.

"With the ramparts built so high
    All the soldiers stuck inside
But this will fall away in time
If you promise to be kind"

...she's got her guard up, her true quirks etc, locked inside, but she'll let her lover in if they promise to be kind.
    do i make any sense?

General CommentI agree with smallthoughts, though the breaking-up thing is plausibe, but I like this interpretation better because it's hopeful and not desperate.

My OpinionI like to think it has to do with human nature. "But this will fall away in time If you promise to be kind" if we just choose to be nice to each other, to be kind and not greedy like "the hearts of the ungrateful who are always wanting more". It can be in anything we do, in any type of relationship. She talks about god, and man, and love, and greed, and pain. I think that's what makes this song so pretty.
