Sign on the window says "lonely,"
Sign on the door said "no company allowed,"
Sign on the street says "why' don't own me"
Sign on the porch says "three's a crowd"
Sign on the porch says three's a crowd"
Her and her boyfriend went to California
Her and her boyfriend done changed their tune
My best friend said, "now didn' I warn ya
Brighton girls are like the moon,
Brighton girls are like the moon"
Looks like a-nothing but rain
Sure gonna be wet tonight on Main Street
Hope that it don't sleet
Build me a cabin in Utah
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout
Have a bunch of kids who call me "pa"
That must be what it's all about,
That must be what it's all about
Sign on the door said "no company allowed,"
Sign on the street says "why' don't own me"
Sign on the porch says "three's a crowd"
Sign on the porch says three's a crowd"
Her and her boyfriend went to California
Her and her boyfriend done changed their tune
My best friend said, "now didn' I warn ya
Brighton girls are like the moon,
Brighton girls are like the moon"
Looks like a-nothing but rain
Sure gonna be wet tonight on Main Street
Hope that it don't sleet
Build me a cabin in Utah
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout
Have a bunch of kids who call me "pa"
That must be what it's all about,
That must be what it's all about

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
i agree about this song being about rejection, but why does the sign on the window say "lonely"? oh and the rhyme scheme of the third stanza is brilliant, i love it.
I think this song really defines Bob Dylan.<br /> <br /> "Sign on a window says Lonely" Refers to the way outsiders looking in may see things.<br /> <br /> The Mob sees someone who does not desire much outside contact as a "loner" <br /> <br /> The first Verse defines the way his ideal life may seem to onlookers<br /> "lonely"<br /> <br /> The second and third he makes his case against "Mainstreet life"<br /> -not his cup of tea. "looks like nothin but rain"<br /> <br /> <br /> The last verse defines the Ideal living situation. Cut off from the world with the people he loves the most. Doing the things he loves most.<br /> <br /> Beautiful song. <br /> <br /> Perpetually in my head.
