"Devil By My Side" as written by and David/wong Usher....
Believe in hope,
Believe in faith,
Believe in things I can't fight,
Believe in truth,
Believe in slavery,
But it's only the television kind,
Believe that light will find a way,
Believe in jets as they blow into the sky
Believe in you, believe in me,
And all of these things,

Devil by my side,
And the freaks are out we're in force tonight,
And you opened me wide,
Cause it's cold in there and it's warm outside

Believe that hate will never die,
Believe in sex and love in a dangerous time,
Believe in grace and your intelligence,
Believe in exploring the corners of the mind,
Believe your truth is not my truth,
That God can exist with many faces at one time,
Believe that we will find a way through all of these things,

Devil by my side,
And the freaks are out we're in force tonight,
And you opened me wide,
Cause it's cold in there and it's warm outside,
Hard when you realize that you'll never have what you're trying to find.

General Commentthe piano opening is great... and so are the lyrics. a rather optimistic song... my favourite line is "believe your truth is not my truth"... very poignant and straightforward. "believe that hate will never die" makes me think that 1) it will never die, so don't bother try to eradicate it; and 2) we can BELIEVE that it will never die, but we can solider on and make sure that it WILL die... i'd like to think the second interpretation is the more accurate one, since it fits in with the positive perspective that's taken for much of the song... the devil's by my side, but he's not going to destroy... it's hard when you realize that you'll never have what you've tried to find, but it doesn't mean that you won't find it! don't let the devil (or the negative) control you... great message.

General CommentMy favorite line is the last.

"Hard when you realize that you'll never have what you're trying to find."

The song is so much about life, and it's just gorgeous, the music, the lyrics, his voice!

"Believe that we will find a way through all of these things, " I think that line sums up the entire song.

He did an interview about War Child America on some show called "The Hour" I think... and they asked him about the issues in society today, and he said that he honestly believed that we would resolve those and that it was just a matter of people not wanting to change. In a society, particularly now, when everything's being turned upside-down and it seems as if the world is going to end, we just need to remember the other generations faced their own calamities and horros and like them, "we will find a way through all of these things."

    "Believe in hope,
    Believe in faith"

General CommentI take a more pessimistic, or rather realistic stance on this. Believe that all of those bad things are out there, because they are! They aren't going to go away, and we have to accept that they exist if we want to change things. Even if we try to change them though, "It's hard when you realize that you'll never have what you're trying to find"

General CommentI think by what he means in this song is that we all try to find a higher calling and to reach that we have goals or mediums to attain it. These are all universal ideals that many believe. It will never get us anywhere because they don't exist. David is trying to say that all of various beliefs
separate us and in the end we just need each other, "cold in there, warm out side". In other words, love.
