You say you mean good for me
But you don't do it
You say you have a plan but you just don't go through with it
You say you know the way to go
And I should follow
But all of your empty promises
Leave me hollow

And oh
How do I trust you
How do I love you
When you
Lie to me repeatedly
And oh
How do I have faith, in you
When you just don't come through
Like you say you could

Oh, say can you see
Oh, say can you see

You say that I'm wrong for
Stating my opinion to you
You say that I'm wrong and there'll be quiet consequences too
But I know my rights babe
There'll be no law abridging
The freedom of my speech
Or the right for me to petition for a remedy of grievances

And I want to trust you
I want to love you yeah
But you lie to me repeatedly
And oh I want to have faith in you
But you just don't come through
Like you said you could
Oh say can you see
Hm

I want fresh fruit, clean water,
Air that I don't see
I want the feeling of being safe on my streets
I want my children to be smarter than me
I want, I want to feel
I want to feel, I want to feel free
For real y'all
I'm just telling you so you know
I want to, I want to have faith in you
I really do but you keep lying to me
And it hurts
I believe, I believe you owe it me
Give it to me like you said you would
Hm
Oh say can you see
Hm
Oh say can you see
Oh say can you see
Hm
By the dawn's early light

This song is syrupy sweet, with a bitter after taste.
She’s laying all of her cards on the table about her feelings toward a man who has nothing to offer in return. It’s like the unconditional love that a young child has toward an abusive parent. She can’t help loving him because, well she just does. She then goes on to tell him exactly what she needs in the relationship that will equate to happiness. I love the title of this song and how she uses word play around the concept of a petition. On the very last line of the song “Oh say can you see by the dawn’s early light”, is she giving him an ultimatum to either get his shit together, like real soon, or be prepared to have his ass kicked to the curb ? Sounds like it me. Go on with your bad self Jill.

Actually, this song is about the US Government and how they say they will do one thing and end up doing another.....hence all the references to the Bill of Rights and the "Oh say can you see" lines from the Star Spangled Banner. Jill hits it from a different angle by making it seem like she's talking to a person. She's freaking brilliant, I love Jilly from Philly!

Actually...why would she be so literal...and actually why would she want to love the government? Hmmmm? :)

actually, she's not expressing love at all...she's expressing how she's fed up with the system, she's just making it seem like she's talking to one person. I love her too, she's the biggest breath of fresh air, so motivational too

Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
