"lifeline" as written by and Brooke Fraser....
I have this sinking feeling
Something's weighing me down
I am completely saturated
The waves are crashing closer
My feet already drowned
Doing the thing I said I hated

They've been swimming in the wrong water
Now they're pulling me down
But I am clinging to you, never letting go
'cause I know that you'll lift me out

[Chorus]
Have your way here
Keep me afloat 'cause I know I'll sink without you
Take this ocean of pain that is mine
Throw me a lifeline

Wake up feeling convicted
I know something's not right
Re-acquaint my knees with the carpet
I have to get this out
'cause it's obstructing you and I
Dry up the seas that keep us parted

'cause they've been swimming in the wrong waters
And now they're pulling me down
But I am clinging to you, never letting go
'cause I know that you are gonna pull me out

[Chorus]

They've been swimming in the wrong waters
And now they're pulling me down
But I am clinging to you, never letting go
'cause I know, 'cause I know

[Chorus]

General CommentYeah, just re-discovered this song after going through my iTunes. Great lyrics really, once you really look into them. Can relate to love, God and anyone in need really. Too bad it never reached the other side of the world (Im in Aus btw =P) really deserves more credit. Im surprised she hasnt done much in Aus. either. Ah wells. Guess the world just isn't ready for songwriters like this.

General CommentThis song is amazing! I've loved Brooke Fraser's work for some time now and this song has never really spoken to me until i've experienced its emotions first hand!
The way I see it, this song is about someone who's friends have backslided away from god and they are trying not to be pulled in by the temptation but know they have already began to fall in. However this person is trying desperately to cling tight to god who will pull them out into safety.

    'I have this sinking feeling
    Something's weighing me down
    I am completely saturated
    The waves are crashing closer
    My feet already drowned
Doing the thing I said I hated '

it is like they have begun to be drawn in by the 'waters', like they are turning to things they never agreed to. It holds them back from reaching god.

    'Wake up feeling convicted
    I know something's not right
Re-acquaint my knees with the carpet
I have to get this out
'Cos it's obstructing you and I
Dry up the seas that keep us parted '

that person has been around the wrong crowd, into a state of temptation and they realise what they've done wrong so they get down on their knees and repent. They may not have even done anything wrong but being so...exposed to the wrong doings of people they thought they knew makes them feel covered in filth!

basically the song is saying, hold tight to god. when you know something isnt right, stick with him and he'll keep you strong, be your rock and all.
anyway, you can agree or disagree but this is what it means to me at this current point in time. Absolutely Beautiful! WOW!
